    Description

    Volunteer with Minds Matter NYC and help low-income students achieve their college dreams.

    For over 30 years, Minds Matter NYC has connected driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.

    Volunteer Roles:

    1. Mentors: Share insight from your own college and career journey, while also providing vital support and encouragement to your student through a three-year curriculum.
      1. Commitment: 1.5 hours per week on Saturdays during the school year for 3 years.
    2. Writing Advisors: Help students develop their voice, make an argument using supporting evidence, and learn to be critical readers, ultimately developing strong personal narratives for college applications.
      1. Commitment: 1 hour per week on Saturdays during the school year for 1 year.

    Requirements:

    • Attend at least 80% of Saturday sessions
    • Be a college graduate
    • Pass a background check
    • Attend mandatory meetings
    • Be community-oriented, adaptable, able to listen, and a role model for young people

    • Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a 30-minute virtual interview
    • Training for the 2024-2025 academic year begins in September and the program starts in October

    Directions

    When and where do sessions take place?

    Sessions take place on high school campuses in Manhattan. Program locations are organized by program year

    • Sophomore – 1 site in East Harlem
    • Juniors – 1 site in Chinatown and 1 site in East Harlem
    • Seniors – 1 site in Chelsea

    Mentors start in the Sophomore Program and cycle through three program locations. Writing Advisers are assigned one location and can stay there year to year or cycle through.
