    About Southeast Asian Development Center (SEADC)

    SEADC is a 501 (c) 3 organization founded in San Francisco to help resettle Southeast Asian refugees. Today, SEADC offers comprehensive services in youth development, workforce development, life skills, health and wellness programming designed to empower our Southeast Asian community members to thrive.     The Role

    The Board of Directors is responsible for governance functions including determining the mission and purpose of the organization, selecting, supporting and evaluating the Executive Director, strategic planning, and ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization. The Board reflects the community we serve.

    Responsibilities:

    Strategic planning, governance, and oversight

    • Participate in creating or updating SEADC’s strategic plan.
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as s/he develops and implements SEADC’s strategic plan.
    • Review big-picture outcomes and metrics created by SEADC for evaluating its impact and regularly measure and evaluate its performance and effectiveness using those metrics.
    • Review, provide feedback, and approve SEADC’s annual budget, financial documents, and audit reports, upholding the board’s fiduciary responsibility.
    • Make strategic business decisions and uphold the Board’s legal responsibility.
    • Participate in and contribute to the annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director.
    • Identify and recruit potential new Board members for the organization.
    • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments as needed.
    • Represent SEADC to stakeholders, acting as an ambassador for the organization.

    Fundraising

    • Make a meaningful, personal financial contribution to ensure 100% board giving.
    • Participate in identifying, cultivating, meeting, soliciting, and stewarding gifts from individual donors, funders and/or corporations in support of the short- and long-term financial goals of SEADC.

    Qualifications

    • Commitment to the SEADC’s mission.
    • Demonstrated track record of leadership and or community engagement and impact.
    • Well-connected in the local community and/or professional community, and able to leverage those relationships for the organization’s benefit.
    • Willingness to enthusiastically share information about the SEADC with friends, family, and colleagues.
    • An approach to this work that includes integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of SEADC’s beneficiaries.

    Board terms/participation

    • Participate in all scheduled board, offsite strategy meeting, and committee meetings.
    • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.

    Attend functions, networking events, volunteer SEADC events and activities.

    • Serve a term of two years with eligibility for renewal up to 3 terms

    How to Apply

    SEADC Board of Directors Application

    Southeast Asian Development Center (SEADC) seeks applications for board member positions starting in July 2025. Prospective applicants must demonstrate an interest in supporting SEADC work to empower diverse communities from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and other countries from Southeast Asia.

    The Board of Directors is governing body of the Southeast Asian Development Center and is responsible for: determining the mission and purpose of the organization; selecting, supporting and evaluation the Executive Director; strategic planning; and ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the organization.

    We are seeking candidates with a wide range of expertise, skills, and background who demonstrate commitment, investment, and deep roots in the Southeast Asian American communities. Board member skills will support SEADC’s governance, strategic thinking, financial management, and fundraising. SEADC is looking for candidates who have the following experience:

    • Deep commitment, focus, and expertise on the issues impacting Southeast Asian American communities;
    • Previous board membership experience, particularly around governance as it relates to leading committees, meetings, and facilitating decision
    • making;
    • Experience with financial management and oversight, ideally in a nonprofit context;
    • Experience with human resources, particularly around policies and processes to ensure equitable practices in nonprofit settings;
    • Fundraising experience (grassroots, philanthropy, or others); or
    • Experience in providing behavioral health services (licensed social worker, therapist, psychologist, or professional counselor).

    SEADC is very interested in ensuring members of impacted and marginalized Southeast Asian American communities are represented among board members. Applicants with any of the following backgrounds, identities, and experiences are strongly encouraged to apply:

    • Direct personal or family experience as an immigrant and/or refugee;
    • Former SEADC client;
    • Formerly incarcerated;
    • Family impacted by the justice system;
    • Low-income, underemployed, and/or working-class background;
    • LGBTQIA+ identified; or
    • Transitional age youth identified (18-24 years old).

    Board Term: Board terms are two years. Members are eligible for renewal for up to 3 terms. Members may not have a fourth consecutive term but must cycle off for at least a year and reapply.

    Board meetings: The Board meets every two months from 6:30-8:30pm in person and/or through Zoom. In addition, board members are required to attend an annual day-long in-person offsite strategy planning session.

    Committee meetings: On average, committees meet every two months but may be monthly, depending on the volume of committee work.

    Board Give/Get and Financial Commitment: SEADC is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that relies on grants, donations, and other support to meet annual operating budget needs. Board members are expected to and commit to give and get: an annual personal financial donation (give) of a personally meaningful amount; and assist with securing additional cash or in-kind donations from their employer, personal contacts, and other sources (get). We strive for a giving participation level of 100%.

    Calendar for Nominations:

    • December 2024 - Call for nominations begin
    • January 31, 2025 - Deadline for completed board application form
    • March 2025 - Select Candidate interviews with SEADC Board Governance Committee members and staff
    • April 2025 – Board of Directors meet to discuss and endorse 2025-2026 slate of Directors
    • May-June 2025 - Candidates will be notified of the status of their application
    • July 1, 2025 – 2025-2026 Board of Directors term begins
