    Become a Mentor

    BACKGROUND: We are Mentor a Promise, a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to work with students that reside in NYC shelters to create a comprehensive individualized career plan. We have different sites throughout the city.

    SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: We are committed to facilitating a supportive environment to encourage our students to be active participants in their educational journey through our student-centered learning philosophy. Our program is a testament to this philosophy. We work with all school-aged students while in shelter and after shelter through our online program. While in shelter, we provide a comprehensive academic and emotional support to students in shelter. As a Mentor, you’ll be instrumental in our mission, implementing our curriculum of student-centered learning. You’ll be aiding in identifying the educational gaps of our students and finding creative solutions, while assisting students with homework. Your role underscores the heart of our program ensuring students feel both supported and empowered. We pride ourselves to help our students be an active member of their educational journey.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Basic Program Operations
    2. Participate in Volunteer orientations.
    3. Assist in setup and close of the program each day.
    4. Greet students as they arrive and help them get settled.
    5. Prepare equipment and resources for group lessons.
    6. Help to distribute food to students.
    7. Share observations with program staff.
    8. Academic Support
    9. Help students with homework.
    10. Engage with students to ensure understanding.
    11. Group Lesson Assistance
    12. Support during ESL and SEL games and activities.
    13. Provide logistical assistance.
    14. Engage with students to support active participation.
    15. Interpretation and Translation
    16. Offer real-time interpretation.
    17. Translate student documents/materials as needed.
    18. Student Interaction
    19. Encourage and monitor student participation.
    20. Embrace and maintain a positive, supportive environment

    REQUIREMENTS:

    The requirements should include:

    • Minimum education: completed junior year of high school, must be 18 years or older
    • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
    • Knowledge of classroom procedures; health and safety precautions a plus
    • Experience working with children and/or peers highly desired
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Strong team player who is self-directed
    • Reliable, flexible, and punctual
    • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in Spanish highly desirable
