    STEM Canada is a registered not-for-profit global program specializing in an advanced, bar-none STEM-based educational curriculum emphasizing the interconnected subject areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The STEM program is open to all students from preschool to high school with the mission to deliver top-notch STEM literacy and application, designed to teach students in the STEM fields, yielding globally competitive results.

    Job Description:

    A nephrologist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of kidney-related disorders. These include chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney stones, hypertension related to kidney dysfunction, and conditions requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. Nephrologists work with patients of all ages and often collaborate with other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive care.

    Start date: January 6, 2025

    Time commitment: 2 to 6 hours per week for the volunteer teaching assistant

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Diagnose and treat kidney-related conditions using advanced diagnostic tools such as blood tests, urine analysis, and imaging studies.
    • Develop and manage treatment plans, including medications, dialysis, or lifestyle changes.
    • Oversee patients undergoing dialysis, ensuring their treatment is effective and well-tolerated.
    • Collaborate with transplant surgeons and other specialists to manage pre- and post-kidney transplant care.
    • Educate patients about kidney health and strategies for disease prevention or progression management.
    • Monitor patients with chronic conditions and adjust treatment plans as needed.
    • Participate in clinical research or teaching, if working in an academic setting.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
    • Completion of an internal medicine residency program (3 years).
    • Completion of a nephrology fellowship program (2-3 years).
    • Active medical license in the practicing jurisdiction.
    • Board certification in nephrology (optional but preferred).
    • Expertise in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic kidney disorders.
    • Proficiency in procedures such as kidney biopsies and management of dialysis systems.
    • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to develop effective care plans.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients and interdisciplinary teams.
    • Ability to manage complex cases and work under pressure in critical care settings.
