    Teaching English in Guatemala

    Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans is looking for qualified volunteer English as a second language Teachers who will instruct and supervise Guatemalan primary and high school students living in poverty. English classes are held Monday to Friday in our Educational Center during our after-school programs in San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a typical Mayan village half an hour from Antigua, Guatemala. Class sizes are generally eight to 15 students, but some teaching time will be spent one-on-one. We require 20 hours a week of teaching time, which includes class time and preparation.

    You will have the opportunity to use and develop your teaching skills and to challenge yourself with hands-on experience in a non-profit organization while engaging with children of a different culture. This volunteer position comes with a modest monthly stipend.

    Requirements:

    • English as a first language
    • Previous experience with children
    • Patience, flexibility and love for children
    • Strong communication and time management skills
    • Sensitivity to cultural differences
    • Ability to make the most of limited resources
    • Organized, punctual, creative, ability to work well with others

    Responsibilities

    • Teach English to beginner and intermediate level students through dynamic, fun and participatory activities
    • Following our curriculum, design creative activities and comprehensive lesson plans
    • Use a wide range of teaching methods (stories, media, indoor or outdoor games, drawing, English story books, etc.) to enhance the children's learning experience
    • Make suggestions to augment our supply of teaching material and to expand our current curriculum
    • Evaluate children's performance by organizing vocabulary and progress tests
    • Track attendance
    • Supervise short-term volunteers by assigning them lesson tasks to carry out with students who need one-on-one or small-group teaching sessions
    • Remain in constant communication with the English Program Coordinator about any particular needs and update him on student progress
    • Adhere to teaching standards and safety regulations as established by official sources
