    Description

    Resident Care Volunteer

    The Schenectady Community Home, Inc. dba Joan Nicole Prince Home is a 2-bed comfort home dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable, caring residence for terminally ill patients in need of a home during their final days. The Home is not a medical facility, has a homelike environment, and is primarily staffed by volunteers. Staff and volunteers serve as a surrogate family care unit for the residents during their stay.

    Personal Care of Male and Female Residents

    -Assist residents with walking

    -Assist with bathing/hygiene as indicated/appropriate

    -Monitor for resident safety

    -Hair Care - comb/brush

    -Mouth Care - brush teeth; clean dentures; use mouth swabs

    -Nail Care - clean, file

    -Skin Care - apply lotion/give back rub

    -Change depends after urine and fecal incontinence, if needed

    -Assist with any toileting needs

    -Dressing - assist with

    -Urinary catheter - empty bag; care of catheter/ tube and bag

    -Oxygen - apply cannula, adjust flow rate

    Medications - administer meds as prescribed by Hospice; chart date/time given/your initials

    Nutrition

    -Prepare/serve/cleanup light meals for residents

    -Feed/assist resident with eating/feeding

    Housekeeping

    -Bed - change/make

    -Sweep/vacuum/mop/dust as needed

    -Kitchen - fill/empty dishwasher

    -Trash - empty wastebaskets/recycle

    -Laundry - wash resident’s clothing separately, fold and return to resident’s room

    Communication

    -Communicate appropriate information about resident to JNP staff/ Hospice/other volunteers

    Emotional Support

    -Learn to be a “good listener” and a healing presence

    -Provide emotional support to resident and their family

    Remember:

    -Understand that that people do die and incidences may happen while you are at the Home. Staff may be in the Home upstairs – call if something occurs.

    -Hospice is available 24hrs/day, on-call after 4pm & through out weekends

    - JNP Home staff is available 24hrs/day. Someone is ALWAYS on-call whenever staff is not present in the Home
