    Description

    Treasurer for Safe Haven Space

    Organization’s Purpose:

The purpose of Safe Haven Space is to provide refugee students access to mental health education, programs, and services.

The business and affairs of Safe Haven Space are managed by its Board of Directors, who oversee and govern the organization’s properties and funds, except as otherwise provided by the nonprofit corporation law of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the organization’s Articles of Incorporation, or its Bylaws. The Board is entrusted with two primary duties: the Duty of Care and the Duty of Loyalty. The Duty of Care requires board members to act in good faith, with the care an ordinarily prudent person in a similar position would exercise under comparable circumstances, and in a manner believed to be in the best interests of the organization. The Duty of Loyalty mandates that board members prioritize the organization’s best interests above personal gains, barring any self-dealing unless fully disclosed to the board and clearly beneficial to the organization.

    Board Member Description:

The Board of Directors is responsible for guiding the organization, fundraising, and ensuring the nonprofit has the necessary resources. This may involve attending networking events and forming valuable connections. Members are also responsible for oversight, insight, and foresight of the corporation. Board members will serve as volunteers without compensation.

    Time Frame:

Each board member shall serve a one to two-year term.

    Meeting Time and Communication Expectations:

Board meetings will be held monthly.

    Position Description:

The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial health of Safe Haven Space, ensuring financial accountability, and maintaining accurate and transparent records. This role includes tracking income and expenditures, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with all financial regulations and nonprofit laws.

    Responsibilities:

    • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions and ensure timely reporting to the board.
    • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and present them at board meetings.
    • Oversee the preparation of the annual budget, working closely with the Executive Director and the board to establish financial goals and monitor progress.
    • Ensure Safe Haven Space complies with all federal, state, and local nonprofit financial regulations.
    • Manage banking relationships and oversee cash flow to maintain sufficient operating funds.
    • Coordinate the filing of annual tax returns and any other required state or federal filings.
    • Collaborate with the board to develop and implement financial policies and procedures.
    • Assist with fundraising efforts by providing financial insights and support in managing donor contributions and grants.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and coordinate audits as needed.
    • Ensure that board members understand the financial statements and reports to aid in informed decision-making.
    • Attend all board meetings and workshops.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in financial management or accounting, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
    • Must reside in the United States.
    • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices and principles.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret and communicate financial information to non-financial board members.
    • Proficiency in using accounting software and other financial management tools.
    • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Safe Haven Space’s mission.
    • Ability to manage confidential information with integrity and discretion.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills, with experience managing budgets and financial planning.
