    Description

Volunteer with Frontenac State Park: Seed cleaning and Biochar! | February 22, 9am-12pm

Volunteers will support Frontenac State Park leadership in two distinct restoration tasks to support the park’s restoration of recently acquired parcels of land. The first activity will involve processing removed invasive material in biochar: an environmentally-friendly alternative to open pile burning which can reduce carbon emissions while improving soil on-site. This activity will occur along a new section of park property where the park leadership is working to establish a new trail system. The second activity will take place indoors, with volunteers cleaning and sorting previously gathered prairie forb and grass seeds for park staff and/or volunteers to use at an upcoming seeding effort. These seeds will be used to help restore and add biodiversity to lower quality prairie sections within the park.

Volunteers will learn about biochar and how to harvest/clean native prairie seeds.
