    Description

Be the Change as a Tutor with Seeds of Literacy!

    Position Summary

Our volunteer tutors are truly the heart of Seeds of Literacy. As a tutor, you’ll provide one-to-one attention, instruction, and encouragement to adult students as they work toward the GED® credential and a life of possibilities.

~ Comprehensive Tutor Training Is Provided! ~

What Does A Tutor Do? (Essential Duties and Responsibilities)

    • PROVIDE INSTRUCTION in one or more areas of GED® prep (Language Arts, Math, Science, & Social Studies). YOU decide what subjects and levels you want to tutor.
    • COLLABORATE with Site Coordinators to provide the best educational experience possible
    • GUIDE THE STUDENT through lesson plans and worksheets provided by the Site Coordinators.
    • ENCOURAGE students. Sometimes the most supportive person in a student’s life is a tutor.
    • SHOW discretion and respect for the students’ stories
    • ASK for support from staff if you need it

Requirements You Probably Already Have (even if you've never been an educator)

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • At least 18 years of age
    • Able to communicate clearly in English
    • Available to tutor (1) two-hour session a week, most weeks.
    • Accept the Seeds of Literacy policy of non-discrimination:
    • Some experience with Zoom if working in the Virtual Classroom
    • Access to a computer with camera and internet connection if working in the Virtual Classroom

    TUTORS DO NOT

    • Create lesson plans (Site Coordinators do that for you)
    • Tutor every session, every day. (We're flexible. Life gets in the way of even the most well-intentioned tutor. One tutoring session is just 1% of your entire week.)
    • Remember the Quadratic Equation (The answers are on the back of all of the worksheets if you're willing to learn alongside the student. Plus, YOU select what subjects and levels you want to tutor)
    • Discipline students. (Everyone in the Seeds classroom is an adult)
    • Work alone. (Site Coordinators are always in the room ready to jump in to answer your questions)

A person most likely to be successful in this position is:

    • An empathetic and energetic person who is excited to help others
    • Someone who is able to work with people of different backgrounds and abilities
    • A person who is comfortable and/or has experience with sharing information to diverse groups
    • Someone who can communicate effectively with a non-judgmental approach and style
    • A person who is highly motivated, understands their role, and can jump right in
