    Description

    The Michigan Center for Youth Justice (MCYJ) seeks a dedicated and compassionate pro bono attorney to join our team. The ideal candidate will provide legal advice to youth and families seeking assistance on issues related to juvenile law. This role is crucial in advocating for the rights and well-being of young people within the legal system.

    MCYJ is a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing policies and practices that reduce confinement and support trauma-informed, racially equitable, socio-economically and culturally responsive, community-based solutions for Michigan’s justice-involved children, youth and young adults. Our vision is a fair and effective justice system for Michigan’s children, youth, and young adults. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintain knowledge of juvenile law and procedures in the state of Michigan;
    • Connect youth and their families with appropriate resources when necessary;
    • Provide legal advice to youth and their families in various matters related to juvenile law;
    • Assist clients in understanding their legal rights and options;
    • Maintain accurate and confidential client records and case files; and
    • Serve the clients in a holistic and client-centered manner.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
    • Previous experience providing defense representation in the Michigan juvenile justice system.
    • Strong commitment to social justice and the mission of MCYJ.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with integrity.
    • Willingness to work pro bono and contribute to MCYJ's goals.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with people of different backgrounds and lived experiences. Proven expertise in communicating with children and adolescents is preferred.
    • Must demonstrate commitment to indigent defense, social justice issues, and/or Michigan communities.

    WORK CONDITIONS 

    • This is a volunteer position with work available on an as-needed basis.
