    Organization: DEFEND (Nonprofit) and 65square

    Position: We are looking for one or a few DevOps engineers to help with the process. Must have experience. Must speak/understand English well. Must be available 2-3 hours per week. May turn into a paid position.

    About Us:

    DEFEND is a volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to reducing risks for children and vulnerable people online. We are currently building 65square, the world’s healthiest social media and dating platform, designed with game-like features and characteristics of an MMO. Our goal is to create a safer, more positive online space for users.

    Role Description:

    The DevOps Engineer will play a critical role in enhancing the efficiency of our software development and operational processes. This position involves deploying product updates, identifying production issues, and implementing integrations that align with our organizational goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, experience with cloud services, and a commitment to supporting non-profit initiatives through technology.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Build and implement new development tools and infrastructure that support the organization’s mission.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their needs and convey them effectively to developers.
    • Automate and improve development and release processes to enhance productivity.
    • Test and analyze code written by others to ensure quality standards are met.
    • Ensure systems are secure against cybersecurity threats while maintaining compliance with relevant regulations.
    • Identify technical problems and develop software updates or fixes as necessary.
    • Work closely with software developers to ensure adherence to established processes.
    • Deploy updates and fixes while providing Level 2 technical support for internal systems.
    • Develop tools that reduce errors in production environments and improve user experience for both staff and beneficiaries.
    • Create software solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing back-end systems used by the organization.
    • Perform root cause analysis on production errors; resolve technical issues promptly.
    • Design procedures for system troubleshooting, maintenance, and documentation of best practices.
    • Participate in project planning sessions; contribute insights based on technical expertise.

    Qualifications:

    • MUST be 18 years and above.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • Experience working within non-profit organizations or understanding their unique challenges is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), orchestration tools (Kubernetes), or similar technologies.
    • Proven experience as a DevOps engineer or in a similar software engineering role within a non-profit or mission-driven environment.
    • Proficiency with version control systems such as Git; familiarity with GitHub workflows is preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of programming languages such as Ruby or Python; experience with scripting is essential.
    • Understanding of databases (SQL) and cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).
    • Excellent problem-solving skills coupled with a collaborative team spirit.
