An opportunity to be a source of support to someone in a crucial moment of need.

Why this recipe matters

The Crisis Text Line has assisted 9,000,0000 people over the last ten years. According to their Decade of Impact report (PDF), 87% of texters found their Crisis Counseler to be helpful. The Crisis Text Line is a free service that can be reached at any time, whether someone is in a state of immediate crisis, or simply overwhelmed and in need of someone to talk to.

Ingredients

  • A computer
  • A US Social Security Number and/or US address
  • An interest in developing active listening skills
  • 4 hours per week to commit to volunteering (until 200 hours are reached)
  • A self care practice!

Recipe

  1. Create an account.

Once you select this link to the sign up form, you can create your user profile and start your official application. Make sure to be on the lookout for your verification email after you select “Continue to Application” at the bottom of the page.

2. Fill out your application.

The application process will take 20 - 30 minutes to complete. Here’s what to expect:

  • Questions that pertain to general background information
  • Questions about what inspired you to volunteer
  • The requirements for volunteering

If you have any questions as you’re filling out the form, you can send the Crisis Text Line an email at info@crisistextline.org, or check out their Help Center.

3. Register for a training cohort.

After your application has been reviewed (this process can take a few weeks or more, depending on app submission volume) and you pass the required background check, you’ll then enter two weeks of remote training that will help you develop specific crisis counseling skills, and also prepare you for possible scenarios you might encounter during your time as a volunteer.

4. Schedule your first shift.

You can do this by logging in to your account, then selecting “Scheduling.” More on how to do this here.

5. Make sure you take care of yourself.

Use the tools you learn during training or elsewhere to maintain your own emotional wellness, and also take advantage of the support made available by your coaches, supervisors, and other volunteers!

How this recipe has nurtured a community

“I knew this can be heavy, heart-wrenching work. What surprised me is how I leave most shifts feeling optimistic, inspired by the strength and resilience I see in so many of our texters. They touch our lives just like we do theirs. That inspiration stays with me, positively influencing my outlook and choices.”
