  • About Us

Mencius Society for the Arts is named in honor of the Chinese philosopher Mengzi (or 'Mencius') who believed in learning and innate goodness as fundamental human qualities. Accordingly, MSA is devoted to the advance and transmission of traditional and folk arts and to multicultural and social empowerment through creative pursuits. Our educational and performance programs primarily cater to the historically unserved constituents of Chinatown and the Lower Eastside of New York City. In this spirit, our overarching goals are to enhance cultural pride among immigrant communities and to facilitate connectivity between the young and the old, the local and the global. Additionally in the light of the prevailing digital era, Mencius is committed to drive oral transmission and see to the flourish of folk ways through face-to-face, in-person engagement in the arts.
