    The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing  the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Founded in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881 the American Red Cross is a volunteer-based, donor funded non-profit, independent organization. The Red Cross mission is supported through five lines of service: Biomedical Services, Disaster Cycle Services, International Services, Training Services and Service to the Armed Forces.
