  • About Us

Appalachian Mountain Advocates is a non-profit public interest law and policy organization dedicated to fighting for clean water and a clean energy future in the Appalachian region. We work hard to advocate for a sustainable energy economy; the elimination of investment in fossil fuels like coal mines, natural gas pipelines, and coal-fired power plants; and force polluters to pay the costs of cleanup.

Appalachian Mountain Advocates has a distinguished track record of winning precedent-setting cases that have forced coal mine operators to permanently abandon mountaintop removal mining and clean up the pollution caused by coal mining. We have led the charge in opposing the natural gas industry in Appalachia, winning a string of key cases that vacated or suspended federal permits for interstate natural gas pipelines.  Together with a broad-range of allies, we prevented the transfer of an outdated power plant that would have committed West Virginia electricity users to paying for dirty coal-based power for decades. We are currently bringing precedent setting cases to assure that gas well operators plug their unused gas wells. Those cases would stop huge amounts of methane from leaking from tens of thousands of wells. Our cases and precedents will help the region transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy and ensure that renewable energy is cost-competitive.
