Mothers of Incarcerated Sons, also known as MIS, are the Movers & Shakers in our communities, advocating, educating, equipping and building power there. MIS stands out in its unapologetic & steadfast dedication to boosting the voices of Black communities, particularly those impacted by mass incarceration. Our mission is to amplify the voices of the unheard and see the invisible prisoners of the penal system–they are the families of incarcerated individuals. We serve the needs of those incarcerated, returning citizens, and communities impacted by mass incarceration. This dedication is a testament to our value and respect for our communities. Our approach fosters a more reflective and inclusive democracy. We are on a mission to serve the needs of incarcerated individuals, returning citizens, and their families, who are often overlooked in society. We are the Invisible Prisoners of mass incarceration. A fundamental aspect of our work is educating our base and the broader community about their voting rights, especially for returning citizens and detained individuals, who are often unaware they are eligible to vote.
Our Integrated Voter Engagement and Reflective Democracy strategies are central to our work. These strategies involve grassroots organizing, educating Black communities on their voting rights, and empowering them to participate actively in the political process. We focus on training leaders within the community to represent a reflective democracy where leadership mirrors the lived experiences and struggles of the people. Through base-building efforts, we strengthen our community's power, ensuring they are equipped to challenge the systems that have historically marginalized them. This grassroots empowerment is a beacon of hope for a more just and inclusive society.
MIS programming includes Reentry with Dignity, court cost stipends, women's leadership training, and civic engagement.
