The Actors Theatre Workshop, Inc.

  • About Us

The Actors Theatre Workshop is an award-winning non-profit theatre, community center and educational institution that teaches innovative educational techniques and theatre principles to adults and children from all walks of life; produces classical and contemporary plays and documentary films that maintain the highest artistic standards; and develops new dramatic works that examine the social issues of the day. ATW was founded over three decades ago in a studio on Manhattan's upper west side. In 1990, with an outpouring of public and private support, ATW opened its doors to its theatre complex and performance space in Chelsea.

Since 1990, ATW has flourished as an artistic leader in the field, producing award-winning educational programs and productions that develop individual potential, create tangible change and liberate the talents and abilities in people from all walks of life -- homeless children, the prison population, the elderly, theatre artists (from NYC to Israel and Palestine), and members of the business community-- while operating an organization of artistic merit that has proven itself worthy of public, private and civic support.

Thurman E. Scott, ATW's Artistic Director, Executive Producer and Founder, is a widely acknowledged expert of artistic project development. As a director/producer, he creates new products for stage, television and film, from concept to final production. Mr. Scott is an innovator of award-winning arts curriculums and programs for professional artistic training as well as public service to culturally under-served communities.

ATW's original creative techniques develop the imagination, unlock curiosity, open up intuitive abilities and liberate creative expression, thereby demonstrating that creativity is the great equalizer of human beings. ATW has created a number of acclaimed programs that serve the community including The Builders of the New World, an award-winning theatre arts mentorship program for homeless children.

ATW is committed to addressing the conflicts of the community, revealing new insights to the audience and bringing forth hope by teaching original creative techniques to individuals from all walks of life and creating theatre that reveals powerful ideas, examines conflicts and creates hope for fulfillment in the human experience. At ATW we provide tools to change and develop individual potential, proving over and over that creativity truly is the great equalizer and unifier among human beings. It is our core philosophy that theatre can change a life!
