Every week, urban India produces a mound of garbage that weighs twice as much as the Empire State Building. This garbage actually represents a large supply of financial and environmental resource which, instead of being valorized, is left to decay in landfills and dumps. The only processing is done by informal waste pickers who sell paper and plastics to scrap dealers, at the cost the cost of their health and dignity, while earning less than $2 a day.
Waste Ventures is an international social hybrid start-up that incubates solid waste management companies owned and operated by these waste pickers. We provide a blueprint to environmentally process the waste and generate a superior financial return in the process – achieving a triple bottom line.
