    Description

    Leadership Opportunity: Principal

    Our Mission

Brooklyn Jesuit Prep is a Catholic Jesuit middle school serving low-income families of diverse races, ethnicities, and faiths in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. Our mission is to develop young leaders who are open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to doing justice. We achieve this goal through a rigorous academic program, a residential summer leadership camp, and a graduate support program offering academic and tuition assistance through high school. In this way, we break the cycle of poverty through education and further the Jesuit tradition of molding men and women for others.

    Job Summary

As the instructional leader of the school, the Principal provides leadership for faculty and students, supports high-quality classroom instruction, and ensures the smooth functioning of the school. The Principal is responsible for teaching and learning through ongoing instructional feedback, curriculum development, and fostering a school-wide Catholic identity. Additionally, the Principal leads a culture of continuous improvement, excellence, and care, providing students with opportunities to develop and demonstrate proficiency. The Principal is a key member of the leadership team and works closely with the President to promote collaboration, respect, and achievement across the school. The Principal reports directly to the President.

BJP is at a very exciting time in its history. In March of 2025, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a strategic plan that outlines the school’s main goals for the next three to five years. In collaboration with the Board, President, leadership team, and others, the Principal will play a key role in implementing the plan’s objectives. With growing enrollment, strong leadership, and a clear plan in place, the future is bright for this transformative institution.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    Leadership & Culture

    • Lead a faith-based, Jesuit, Catholic middle school in alignment with the school's mission.
    • Foster a school culture that values care, mutual respect, and acceptance of all students.
    • Cultivate a school-wide commitment to academic rigor, leadership development, and helpful feedback for students and adults alike.
    • Lead efforts to ensure the Jesuit, Catholic identity of the school is consistently upheld and enthusiastically alive.

    Instructional Leadership & Staff Management

    • Develop, implement, and evaluate a rigorous middle school curriculum in collaboration with teaching faculty.
    • Use student achievement data to guide instructional decisions and support student success.
    • Supervise, coach, and evaluate faculty, with a focus on fostering growth and professional development. Conduct regular classroom observations and provide ongoing feedback to support teacher development.
    • Lead faculty professional development programs to enhance classroom impact and curriculum alignment with school goals.
    • Recommend hiring and retention decisions for faculty and staff.
    • Directly manage members of the Principal’s Office staff.

    Community & Parent Engagement

    • Oversee the school’s relationships with parents, guardians, and families, ensuring active partnerships in student success.
    • Regularly report on student academic progress to parents, faculty, and relevant school committees.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Admission and Recruitment, Admissions Team, and Program Committee on admissions processes, guidelines, and enrollment goals.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Graduate Support on the placement of 8th graders in NYC Catholic and private high schools.
    • Actively participate in the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus, Jesuit Schools Network, and NativityMiguel Coalition programs.

    Operational Leadership

    • Manage day-to-day operations of the school ensuring consistency, safety, and compliance with relevant laws and current best practices.
    • Identify, supervise, and support director(s) of annual Summer Leadership Academy at Fairfield University.

    Personal Characteristics

    • Passion for providing excellent, Catholic education to underserved communities.
    • Strong leadership qualities: goal-oriented, yet motivational and collaborative with faculty, staff, and students.
    • Ability to thrive in a demanding role with high expectations and limited resources, motivated by the best interests of students.
    • A life-long learner committed to staying current with educational research and continuously improving leadership skills.
