    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Senior Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Professional Ethics is part of the association’s senior leadership focused on advancing the scholarly and professional interests of political scientists in the United States and internationally. The Senior Director’s portfolio includes overseeing the development, implementation and review of the association’s external facing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and policies; its professional ethics resources, policies and procedures, and reporting systems; and initiatives aimed at addressing, inequity, and systemic racism by promoting, enhancing, and developing sustainable, equitable and inclusive environments within the profession. The Senior Director works closely with the Executive Director, Senior Team, relevant association staff and committees to develop and implement the strategic plan and related goals to advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion mission throughout the profession.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
      • Oversees, supervises, and evaluates the management and implementation of all external-facing association diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
      • Collaborates with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team on creating innovative programming for a variety of programs, including but not limited to the Diversity Student Recruitment Program (DSRP), the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute program (RBSI), Diversity Fellowship Program (DFP), the Fund for Latino Politics, the Mentoring Program, and the Advancing Research Grants.
      • Develops and promotes strategies for purposive, action-intended dialogue, and shares best practices with the association’s membership, departments, and relevant committees on strategies for enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the discipline with a focus on recruitment, retention and advancement.
      • Promotes the APSA RESPECT Campaign and develops and shares out additional resources as needed.
      • Lead staff liaison to the APSA Council DEI Policy Committee.
    • Professional Ethics
      • Leads all aspects of APSA’s external-facing professional ethics programs.
      • Facilitates and processes professional ethics cases and matters, including coordinating with the Executive Director, legal, and other relevant parties as needed.
      • Drafts relevant policies and procedures in coordination with the Executive Director.
      • Manages EthicsPoint, APSA’s external reporting platform, the ombuds resources, and the Ethics Guide.
      • Lead staff liaison to the APSA Ethics Committee.
    • Leadership
      • Leads and/or delegates the coordination of relevant external-facing diversity and professional ethics-related association-wide activities and task forces, including facilitating collaboration across APSA departments to help align related programming efforts.
      • Seeks out external funding opportunities and coordinates with APSA development staff to advance related programs, including but not limited to the Ralph Bunche Endowment.
      • Provides strategic, risk-management and compliance advice to Executive Director on a range of policies and topics impacting the association, including but not limited to diversity, equity and inclusion, and professional ethics.
      • Informs strategic directions by collecting and analyzing professional and secondary data, including climate surveys in coordination with the research staff and the diversity, equity and inclusion staff.
      • Produces reports regarding current trends and best practices on recruitment and retention and professional ethics in higher education with recommendations for consideration by the council and the Executive Director.
      • Develops external relationships with other scientific associations to promote and enhance equity and inclusion, and safe, anti-harassment spaces in the profession.
      • Supervises and mentors the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team.
      • Oversees support of the Status Committees
      • Creates and manages the budget for diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the ethics program, and assigned task forces. Oversees program manager’s preparation and facilitation of budget for annual meeting events.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY:

    • Ph.D. in political or other social science preferred, or commensurate experience.
    • Knowledge of political science education and trends, research, and program management.
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience developing, leading and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and change management preferred.
    • Minimum 3-5 years of experience addressing professional conduct issues, such as ethics, responding to grievances, case management, etc.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
    • Strong project management skills with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks concurrently and within established deadlines.
    • Ability to think creatively and strategically as well as independently problem-solve; strategic planning experience preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience working across teams and as a team leader to accomplish goals.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
    • Strong verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Excel, and Word) and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Experience working with web content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress preferred.

    • Hybrid schedule (at least 2 days a week in the office)

    Program Manager, (direct) and Program Assistant (indirect)

    FLSA STATUS:

    This position is considered fulltime and exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore not eligible for overtime pay.
