    Description

    The Veterans Law Center (VLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free legal assistance to low-income veterans. Our work focuses on helping veterans obtain VA compensation benefits for disabilities related to their military service and military discharge upgrades when their separation was unfair or in error. We are seeking a part-time legal assistant to provide administrative support to our legal team. The legal assistant will primarily be responsible for gathering records and other supportive evidence throughout case development, with some client interviewing and follow up communications.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide case support by coordinating with veterans to obtain signatures on forms, requesting military and current treatment records, contacting agencies / providers regarding outstanding requests, and scanning / uploading documents
    • Maintain accurate and complete veteran files throughout the life of each case
    • Conduct initial intake interviews with veterans over the phone
    • Enter notes and veteran information into Clio (legal database system)
    • Follow up with veterans to track the progress of case related recommendations
    • Attend staff meetings and assist with general tasks related to office procedures

    Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Excellent organizational, time-management, and interpersonal communication skills
    • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
    • Ability to provide thoughtful and compassionate services to veterans living with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and/or past trauma(s)
    • Prior experience in an administrative role preferred

    Position Details:

    • Hours: 15-20 hours per week, flexible schedule
    • Compensation: $20-25 per hour, based on experience
    • Location: remote with the option to attend bi-weekly staff meetings in person
