    Description

    The NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research is committed to creating new knowledge about the root causes of poverty, developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences, and rapidly translating research findings into action through policy and best practices.

    We are seeking a talented and motivated part-time Research Assistant to work in collaboration with the WeCare team on a randomized controlled trial: “Answering the Alarm: A System of Care for Black Youth At-Risk for Suicide (WeCare).” This study, a collaboration between New York University, NYC Health and Hospitals (NYC H+H/Kings County), and the University of Michigan, aims to evaluate a system of care for Black youth that includes suicide risk screening as well as an intervention combining safety planning with strategies to improve access to mental health services.

    The Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting on-site recruitment, intervention implementation, and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will have the drive and desire to work and grow in a fast-paced environment, possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and work effectively in a collaborative, diverse team. This position will involve working on-site at Kings and Harlem Hospitals when needed, as well as remotely for follow-up calls and survey administration with patients and caregivers.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist with on-site recruitment and obtaining of informed consent/assent in a pediatric emergency department (ED) setting
    • Assist in engaging youth and caregivers and determining study eligibility
    • Administration of assessments at baseline (on-site) and follow-up (remote)
    • Support of social workers in intervention implementation
    • Data entry into electronic platforms
    • Assistance with preparation of IRB documentation, preliminary data reports, and other tasks as needed
    • Assistance with literature reviews and other study materials
    • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by Project Director and Program Manager

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in fields related to study preferred
    • Knowledge of research methods. Prior work experience as a Research Assistant or similar role preferred
    • Familiarity with REDCap
    • Excellent administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Passionate about mental health, adolescent health and well-being, family supports, community-based research
    • Strong organizational, multitasking and prioritizing skills
    • Proactive self-starter with desire to learn, grow, and be challenged
    • Willingness to work on-site in two emergency departments in NYC. Afternoon and evening hours required.

    Please note:

    • NYU McSilver is currently operating on a hybrid schedule of 3-days a week in-person.
    • This is a grant-funded position with the opportunity for ongoing renewal reviewed on an annual basis.
    • This position does not qualify for visa sponsorship, including STEM-OPT extensions.
