    Founded in 2007, Legacy LA is a community-based non-profit organization focused on youth development. Our mission is to make positive interventions in the lives of young people by offering alternatives to gangs and violence. We build youth's capacity to reach their full potential and equip them with the tools to transform their lives and their community.

    About Our Leadership Program

    Legacy LA’s Leadership Program focuses on social justice, advocacy, and empowerment. Teens are transformed into agents of change for their community by learning strategies and skills to organize themselves and local residents to tackle pressing issues. Youth receive a college scholarship for each completed year of the program.

    Position Summary

    Leadership Development is key to the Dream Big Youth Council Program. The Leadership Coordinator will be responsible for working alongside the Leadership Department staff to run a 10-month long Youth Council. The Youth Council Coordinator will recruit students, build and facilitate a Social Justice Curriculum, ensure effective workshop implementation and support in one or all of the Leadership Programs offered at Legacy LA.

    Specific Duties

    • Outreach & Recruitment of Ramona Gardens youth to participate in the Leadership Program.
    • Ability to cross-collaborate in team dynamics and with other Legacy LA programs and partner organizations
    • Support in overnight and day Leadership Retreats
    • Support in the planning of various Trips
    • Develop and implement youth Social Justice Curriculum and anti-gentrification curriculum for Comunidad Unidad
    • Support youth in the development and implementation of community-based campaigns
    • Serve as lead for 1 of 4 Legacy LA Advocacy Campaigns (Anti-gentrification)
    • Lead community organizing and strategic planning efforts to achieve campaign goals
    • Meet weekly with the Youth Council Cohort and prepare material
    • Meet bi-weekly with campaign workgroups
    • Coordinate and support events and field trips as needed by both Legacy LA and Youth Council
    • Submit weekly work plans
    • Lead artivism efforts (videography, social media, podcast, art) alongside youth for campaigns
    • Support youth council students in completing their service learning projects and planning a town hall event
    • Support with community/coalition events and Legacy LA projects, events, and youth support as needed
    • Serve as additional support for Invest in Youth, Substance Use Disorder, and EJ campaign efforts and actions as needed
    • Develop communications and social media strategies for Anti-gentrification
    • Support with community events and Legacy LA projects/events/ as needed.
    • Coalition building
    • Support in planning Anti-gentrification Trips as needed
    • Other duties as assigned to support Legacy LA and the Leadership Department's growth
    • Supporting with participant rides and van driving when needed

    Skills and Experience

    • Relevant experience in social justice, organizing, and policy advocacy with low-income youth
    • Individual who understands Legacy LA’s core values (Dream Big, Integrity, Community)
    • Curriculum development experience
    • A philosophy compatible with Legacy LA’s mission and the ability to work with diverse communities
    • Adaptable and reliable in face of conflict, crisis, changing priorities
    • Experience with youth organizing and youth leadership
    • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency
    • BA preferred
    • Passion for working on social justice issues
    • Ability to work well both independently and in teams
    • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal)
    • Flexibility in working evenings and weekends required
    • California driver’s license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation required
