    Theater Designer/Tech Director/Instructor

    Full-time Position

    The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time Theater Designer/Tech Director/Instructor beginning in July of 2025. Candidates should have extensive training in theatrical design and technical theater as well as experience teaching high school or undergraduate students. The person selected will be responsible for teaching two sections of Stagecraft and one section of Drama Tech. The Stagecraft classes are a fun mix of technical theater and shop. The Drama Tech class meets after school two days a week and every day during tech weeks to create and run the design and technical needs for one drama production, one dance showcase, and one music concert each semester. The Tech Director also helps prepare our auditorium for various meetings, presentations, and other community events (e.g. student talent show, winter forum). This will include setting up any audio and video needs for each event. The auditorium has a brand new projector and sound system. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment.     Qualifications and desired characteristics:

    • Bachelor's or graduate degree
    • Flexible schedule that can cover day and some evening events
    • Experience working with high school or college-aged students in the theatre arts
    • Commitment to working with high school students outside of the classroom as part of our advising system and other programs
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Interest in possible administrative opportunities
    • Collegiality, Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
    • A collaborative mindset, in producing art and working with colleagues who share a common space
    • Experience with best technical theater practices in designing/building/painting sets, lighting design, props, sound, and video/projections, and budget management.

    The College Prep Arts Department is unique, innovative and rigorous. We offer a variety of courses in the Visual, Music (instrumental & Vocal), Dance, and Dramatic Arts. Students are required to take a minimum of two years of arts courses for graduation; the majority take more. The Arts Department actively cultivates and enjoys a culture of innovative collaboration and collegiality among its members and students. The technical director will share an office with the drama teacher just a stone's throw from the Dance Studio and the Music Building.

    Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of relevant experience that ranges from $72,500 for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $143,700 for teachers with 44 years of prior experience. Employee benefits include medical, vision and dental coverage, a retirement plan to which the school contributes 5% to 9% of annual salary, regardless of employee contribution, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
