    The Survivor and Family Justice Workgroup assists survivors of domestic violence with restraining order and family law relief in connection with divorce, paternity, and custody and support matters. Assistance is provided through court-based domestic violence clinics, a domestic violence hotline, and a virtual family law clinic.

    LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Paralegal (Access to Justice) - SFJWG.

    NOTE – This position is part of a special program created using designated funds. There is no assurance of ongoing funding or employment beyond September 2026.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in any subject or a certificate of completion of an appropriate paralegal program;
    • One (1) year relevant work experience preferred;
    • Experience in providing assistance to low-income individuals, survivors of domestic violence, immigrants and/or other marginalized populations;
    • Self-motivated, takes initiative, ability to learn quickly;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
    • Experience developing and providing trainings and presentations;
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail;
    • Ability to handle ambiguities and to exercise independent judgment;
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, including other attorneys, service providers and support staff;
    • Ability to be flexible in job duties;
    • Comfortable working with various law and law enforcement personnel: police, detectives, social workers and attorneys, among others;
    • Bilingual in Spanish required.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    • Work in conjunction with Family Justice Center (FJC) partners and supervising attorney to facilitate use of the remote hearing studio and to expand remote hearing access for low-income survivors;
    • Provide direct assistance to survivors referred through FJC regarding hearing preparation, for both live and remote hearing options;
    • Accompany clients to court for hearings, filing, and/or mediation;
    • Complete intake interviews for clients referred from other FJC partners;
    • Develop outreach and education materials regarding survivors' access to the justice system, including remote hearing options.
    • Develop outreach and educational materials regarding resources available to Survivors in the County;
    • Develop both client-facing and staff-facing template documents and guides on topics that intersect with domestic violence;
    • Facilitate client referrals to other FJC partners.
    • Conduct trainings and presentations to FJC partners, survivors, and other service providers;
    • Represent LAFLA at Family Justice Center events and programs;
    • Hold regular sessions for survivors to practice using remote hearing technology;
    • Track systemic issues facing Survivors in the County, and work with Managing Attorney to develop strategies for addressing them;
    • Track data and assist with grant reporting; and
    • Other duties as assigned.
