    Description

    We are looking for an enthusiastic assistant editor to join our team.

    As an assistant editor, you will support the managing editor by preparing articles for publication on HistoryLink.org, coordinate with the digital media editor to illustrate the articles, and communicate with writers about style, source, and other questions as they arise. You will also participate in content planning and site management discussions.

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with the editor-in-chief to research and plan new article topics
    • Liaise with team members (e.g. writers, other editors, project managers) ensuring deadlines are met
    • Edit articles according to HistoryLink’s stylebook.
    • Proofread and check articles for accuracy
    • Suggest possible sources for articles
    • Communicate with writers about substantive edits made to their articles
    • Suggest sources for supporting material, like images and illustrations
    • Familiarize yourself with Washington state history curricula to inform content planning.
    • Collaborate with editors, project managers, and communications staff to identify ideas for social media to draw attention to articles
    • Collaborate with other editors on developing and maintaining consistent metadata

    Requirements and skills

    • Proven work experience as an assistant editor
    • Strong writing and proofreading skills
    • Experience with MS Office
    • Willingness to learn custom back-office software
    • Proficiency in English
    • Attention to detail
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to prioritize and multitask
    • Eagerness to engage with historical content

    Desired qualifications

    • Certificate or other training in nonfiction editing
    • Background in Washington state history
