    Description

The Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at New York University School of Law (“Meltzer Center”) is recruiting for a full-time Legal Fellow to work with the Advancing DEI Initiative.

The Meltzer Center offers rare expertise at the intersection of two fields: diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and the law. A research center at one of the world’s most diverse academic institutions, we aim to advance thought leadership on DEI and the law, support the NYU Law community, and share knowledge with external organizations.

The Advancing DEI Initiative is a project of the Meltzer Center, committed to making information on the intersection of law and DEI accessible to supporters of DEI. The Legal Fellow will work under the supervision of the Advancing DEI Initiative’s project director and Meltzer Center leaders, and will, among other duties:

    1. Conduct legal research into topics at the intersection of law and DEI.
    2. Maintain and regularly update the DEI litigation tracker on the Advancing DEI Initiative website.
    3. Write legal explainers and other resources for the Advancing DEI Initiative website to educate users on topics at the intersection of law and DEI.
    4. Communicate with constituents of the Advancing DEI Initiative on developments in the law of DEI through a variety of means, such as social media, a newsletter, and “rapid response” updates.
    5. Expand the material encompassed by the legal tracker, such as by tracking state anti-DEI litigation and anti-DEI legislation.
    6. Work with the Advancing DEI Initiative’s web developer to expand and refine the website over time.

The role is a remote position.

    Qualifications

    • JD or equivalent with knowledge of, and deep interest in, the law of DEI, including anti-discrimination law and constitutional law
    • Strong understanding of the field of DEI and commitment to its core values
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent legal research abilities
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Detail-oriented and self-motivated
    • Ability to work independently and in a small, fast-moving team
    • A commitment to advancing the mission of the Meltzer Center and alignment with our approach to DEI—rigorous, practical, and shame-free.
