    Department: Morivivi Residential Program

    Location: Bronx

    Reports To: Morivivi Program Manager

    Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

    The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) partners with Latinx communities to end gender-based violence. Created as a grassroots response to intimate partner violence and sexual assault, VIP has always centered survivors in its leadership and has worked to create a community of staff that reflects the rich national, ethnic and racial diversity of the communities it serves. VIP runs four non-residential social service programs, two residential shelter and housing programs, and a robust community engagement team.

    The Moriviví Residential Program is a 51-bed scattered site safe dwelling. The goal of this program is to provide short-term shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Supportive services offered at Morivivi include individual counseling, support groups, case management, children’s services, housing advocacy, and referrals for educational/vocational facilities and job preparation. Morivivi promotes healing, empowerment, and self-sufficiency while providing a safe and supportive environment free from violence.

    The Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing the routine upkeep and extensive range of work in the repair and general maintenance of office buildings, safe dwellings and/or apartments; incl. surrounding grounds. The Maintenance Worker is under the direct supervision of the Morivivi Program Manager. The Maintenance Worker is on call for building/apartment emergencies 24 hours a day. Emergency issues include but are not limited to problems with gas, heat, hot water, flooding and/or lock issues.

    Essential Functions:

    • Performing repair or general maintenance (Sweeping, mopping, waxing, garbage collection, etc.) work of VIP’s office buildings, safe dwellings and/or apartments, and surrounding grounds.
    • Overseeing the regular boiler/furnace and gas heat operations, calling for service when necessary.
    • Repairing and treating structures such as showers, floors, sinks, walls, ceilings, and carpets.
    • Performing minor repairs and troubleshooting, incl. new installations and replacing locks and/or keys.
    • Monitoring exit signs and alarms on exit doors.
    • Plumbing repairs as needed, including repair of leaks.
    • Recommending repairs and necessity for outside contractors.
    • Performing building repairs, such as plastering, painting, stripping floors, etc., including repairing and replacing electric plugs and light fixtures.
    • Moving and assisting in the transportation of furniture and equipment.
    • Cleaning the front of buildings includes sweeping and spraying when needed.
    • Garbage collection and bringing garbage to the curbside on garbage removal days. Make arrangements with the Sanitation department to remove special/large items.
    • Snow removal from the front of buildings and on steps, including salting the sidewalk as needed.
    • Maintaining accurate inventory of janitorial supplies and equipment, including receiving and storing deliveries.
    • Pick up and deliver donations to the agency and/or clients as needed.
    • Cover daily responsibilities for any vacancies/absences within the agency.
    • Overseeing extermination of buildings, safe dwellings, and apartments when necessary.
    • Support and comply with the values and policies of the Violence Intervention Program.
    • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled agency and program meetings, including supervision sessions with the Program Manager, case conferences, agency-wide staff meetings, development meetings, and others as needed.
    • Capacity building in all areas of the agency-demonstrating competency with incorporating financial literacy in the performance of their responsibilities.
    • Perform other tasks as required, including any related supervisory and administrative duties as needed.

    Requirements:

    • High School Diploma with a valid certificate of fitness.
    • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of previous experience in a maintenance or custodian role.
    • Fully Bilingual Required (English/Spanish – verbal and written).
    • Previous experience and knowledge in painting, plastering, wallpaper hanging, removal and installation of commercial tiles, plumbing repair, repairing and maintaining heaters/radiators, and troubleshooting air conditioning systems.
    • Must be able to use efficiently various power and hand tools.
    • Must be able to communicate and follow instructions efficiently and fluently in both written and oral form.
    • Ability to assist moving clients in/out of VIP safe dwelling (Shelter) & SHP (Casa Sandra), incl. heavy lifting (30 lbs.) and travel via public transportation (bus, train, etc.)
    • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships.
    • Must be knowledgeable in working with diverse communities, particularly Latino, people of color, and low-income populations, and deliver culturally competent services.
    • Must be well organized, assertive, and work independently and collectively while maintaining a flexible schedule.
    • Must have the ability to operate office equipment such as computers, copy machines, fax machines, phone systems, etc. with solid internet and software skills, including Microsoft Office and client database.
    • A flexible schedule is required to meet the clients’ needs e.g., evenings, weekends
    • Must be able to exercise good judgment and sensitivity at all times.
    • Must ensure agency, program, and client confidentiality at all times.
    • A valid NYS Drivers License a plus.

    Compensation & Benefits

    • Full-Time, Non-Exempt position, working 35 hours per week with an hourly rate of $21.98/hour.
