    Director of Operations

    Avenue for Justice | New York

    For 46 years, Avenues for Justice has diverted thousands of justice impacted young people, ages 13 – 24, across New York City from a punitive criminal justice system to our community-based support program designed to help them lead successful lives. In addition to our core program of court advocacy, we provide our HIRE Up enrichment services on a hybrid platform at our Harlem and Lower East Side Community Centers for workforce training, education, mental health wellness and mentoring. AFJ works with 600+ Participants each year who are justice impacted. On average, 94% of our Court-involved Participants are not re-convicted within three years of enrollment to our program.

    We are seeking a Director of Operations to join our executive team as a key partner to our Executive Director. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of a growing nonprofit by ensuring smooth operations, sound financial management, and a thriving organizational culture.

You will play a pivotal role in managing the day-to-day operations, overseeing finance, and ensuring we have the structures in place to maximize our impact.

    This role is ideal for a collaborative and organized professional who is an exceptional communicator, skilled project manager, and financial expert with a passion for social good.

    Role & Responsibilities

    Operations & Administration

      • Oversee the administrative functions of the organization, including staff and consultant supervision.
      • Manage vendor contracts, including fundraising, bookkeeping, payroll, insurance, and technology.
      • Implement and improve internal systems to ensure efficiency, accountability, and alignment with strategic goals.
      • Guide long-range planning and lead operational strategies to support organizational growth and sustainability.
      • Manage human resources, including recruitment, personnel policies, and employee performance reviews.
      • Oversee capital improvement projects for office and community centers, from budgeting to execution.
      • Prepare and coordinate board meetings, governance activities, and committee engagement.
      • Oversee facility operations and lease negotiations across multiple locations.

    Finance & Strategy

      • Lead financial planning and budgeting to ensure fiscal sustainability.
      • Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Executive Director and Board Treasurer.
      • Supervise financial operations, including accounts receivable/payable, payroll, and cash flow management.
      • Ensure compliance with grant and financial reporting requirements.
      • Oversee the annual audit and ensure regulatory compliance.

    Full-time, Monday to Friday schedule; with occasional evening and weekend work required.

    The salary range is $80,000 to $90,000. All full-time employees receive an excellent benefits package including health and dental insurance, a 401k retirement plan, sick and paid vacation time per year.
