    Description

    Public Citizen Litigation Group is seeking a Deputy Director to help manage the work of a 10-lawyer public-interest law firm, litigate a broad range of public interest cases, and serve as deputy general counsel of Public Citizen.

    Located in Washington, DC, the Litigation Group is the litigating arm of the consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen. We litigate against the federal government and state governments to advance and defend health, safety, worker, and consumer-protection regulations, and file briefs in support of the government to defend regulations. We handle appeals on behalf of consumers, patients, and other individuals on issues arising in products liability, consumer financial protection, and worker rights cases. We also frequently file amicus curiae briefs in the Supreme Court and courts of appeals on issues within our areas of interest. The Litigation Group’s docket addresses topics including:

    • health, safety, and consumer-protection regulation, including administrative law cases seeking to preserve public protections in the face of corporate and government anti-regulatory efforts,
    • access to the civil justice system, including issues concerning class actions, federal preemption, and forced arbitration,
    • consumer-financial protection, under statutes such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act,
    • government transparency, including cases under the Freedom of Information Act, and
    • the First Amendment, including issues concerning commercial speech and campaign finance reform.

The Litigation Group also advises and assists other Public Citizen divisions and other public interest organizations on legislative and regulatory matters.

    The Deputy Director will help to supervise the work of other Litigation Group attorneys, while also litigating their own docket of public-interest cases. Assisting the Director in her general counsel role, Deputy Director will also work on matters relating to lobbying issues and employment issues, review contracts, and handle other matters for Public Citizen.

    Qualifications include a minimum of 15 years of post-law-school litigation experience, including experience reviewing other lawyers’ work, excellent analytical and research skills, excellent writing ability, creativity, and dedication to public interest work. Applicants should have a strong interest in administrative law and consumer law. Appellate experience preferred. Applicants must be admitted to a state bar and admitted to or eligible for admission to the DC Bar.
