    Description

    Midstate Council for Occupational Safety and Health (MCOSH) has a permanent job opening for our Program & Development Director. This is a full-time position under a contract with the Painters’ Union. Wage and benefits go up to $36.50/hr., depending on experience. The position will begin with and include orientation and any necessary training by one of our current Health & Safety Trainers. Bi-lingual Spanish will be an asset.     Midstate COSH is a local affiliate of National COSH, a network of workplace health and safety advocate organizations. Our work is in the southern Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions of New York State. Twenty-five years ago, the Tompkins-Cortland Labor Coalition created a program to promote occupational safety and health for local union and non-union workers. That program, backed by the labor-run Midstate COSH, remains committed to keeping Southern Tier workplaces safe from hazardous practices and conditions.

    Among other qualifications, we are looking for someone with:

    • Grant writing skills and understanding of nonprofit budgeting and financial management

    Passion for worker training and organizing

    • Microsoft Office and Excel proficiency
    • Program management experience

    Job Description – Midstate COSH Program and Development Director

    • Grant management – quarterly and final report writing, financials recordkeeping, create and maintain grant spreadsheets allocating all MCOSH expenses.
    • Grant writing and fundraising to ensure maintenance and growth of MCOSH programming and financial resources.
    • Work with Outreach Director and Youth Coordinator to initiate and facilitate outreach to current and prospective training partners.
    • Be able to provide training on core program modules, including training for trainers.
    • Approve and submit timesheets for staff working on programs being managed.
    • Oversee activities of bookkeeper.
    • Advertise for and hire workers, in collaboration with the MCOSH Board, for programs being managed.
    • Oversee Teens Lead @ Work program, in coordination with Youth Coordinator, including (but not limited to) mentoring Peer Leaders and leading their meetings, curriculum development and training.
    • Co-facilitate bi-weekly staff meetings with Outreach Director.
    • Organize annual Workers’ Memorial Day events and maintain awareness of area workplace fatalities.
    • Maintain relationships with local and regional union organizations, including support for union organizing efforts by farmworkers.
    • Meet periodically with the MCOSH Board Chair and report at quarterly Board meetings.
    • Facilitate communication with National COSH and participate in all National COSH conference calls and the annual conference. These and other work-related programs may require overnight travel.
    • Be prepared to speak publicly on behalf of MCOSH.
    • Manage website and Facebook page, in coordination with Outreach Director and Youth Coordinator.
    • Maintain office space and coordinate with bookkeeper, MCOSH Treasurer, office partners and building manager.
    • Assist in maintaining safety protocols in the office and with in-person training.
    • Other duties as may be directed by the MCOSH Board.

    This is a union position with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. It is a full-time position (40 hours) with the possibility of working fewer hours. The wage scale is based on experience with the current top rate of $29.95/hour. Benefits include 18 hours of paid personal time and an additional $6.55/hour in payments which may be applied to the union pension, annuity and other funds, or to medical coverage from the union’s health insurance plan.
