    Description

    Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Data Visualization Analyst for our Communications team. Use your knack for discovering stories and connecting the dots across complex datasets to address the most important challenge of our time: climate change. This role will be responsible for helping bring to life the robust insights found in our global power trackers, which are regularly referred to by the world’s leading media organizations, international agencies, policy makers, and energy and climate professionals around the world. The Data Visualization Analyst will be responsible for enhancing GEM’s storytelling across our external communications — including print, digital and interactive content — by furthering a strategic approach to data visualization.

    The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

    About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

    Location

GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Further develop GEM’s data visualization strategy as part of a renewed communication and branding strategy.
    • Design visualizations for GEM’s data updates, briefings, and flagship reports including Boom and Bust Coal using advanced data visualization tools and storytelling techniques.
    • Develop and regularly produce and pitch stories using GEM trackers and other data sets for media and other practitioners in the climate and energy space.
    • Create intuitive, visually appealing charts, graphs, and infographics to present data in a clear, concise, and compelling manner.
    • Provide visual, technical, editorial, and design support to GEM staff.
    • Develop staff skills on presentation design and a critical eye for data visualization communication.

    Required Qualifications

Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized.

The following experience and skills are required for this position:

    • 5+ years of experience working with data visualization, preferably in a newsroom setting.
    • Strong skills in at least one visualization technology for digital graphics (D3, Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, etc.).
    • Comfort handling and analyzing datasets, either in spreadsheets or programming languages.
    • Ability to translate data into compelling narratives using strong writing skills.
    • Passion for the latest trends in data visualization storytelling.
    • Experience in graphic design.
    • Experience in using one or more programming languages, ideally used to create production-ready data visualizations.
    • An understanding of the energy and climate policy landscape.
    • Experience working remotely and independently while a strong team player.
    • English fluency.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Established media network of reporters in the fields of data journalism and energy, preferably with experience working in journalism.
    • Track record of pitching and publishing stories in top tier media.
    • Strategic thinker with a track record of implementing organizational-wide change.
