    Description

    Executive Director Search

Just Horizons Alliance (JHA) seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader with nonprofit management experience who will drive our mission forward. This is an invitation to be at the forefront of an uncommon organization with a visionary calling to serve the common good.

    Who We Are

Located in the heart of Boston’s vibrant Kenmore Square, Just Horizons Alliance (JHA) is a forward-thinking nonprofit designed to address unprecedented challenges associated with a rapidly changing world. JHA’s distinctive approach integrates rigorous scientific research aided by computational modeling with deep wisdom informed by prosocial ethics, inclusive virtues, and expansive spirituality. Our small, agile, and creative team works within an infrastructure that sustains JHA’s four major operating divisions:

    • Advanced Data Science and Computational Modeling
    • Ethics for AI and Emerging Technologies
    • Thought-Leader Network
    • Independent Publishing House

JHA supports positive change by articulating adaptive responses that are both research-informed and ethically-guided. Specifically, JHA’s data science division conducts independent academic research that demonstrates how human-in-the-loop ethical computing can help solve intractable social problems; our networking branch promotes connection and conversation among change makers; our book-publishing branch amplifies the voices of spiritual outliers; and our digital ethics branch educates and builds accountability around new and emerging technologies. We call JHA a "strategic change engine" because our work equips change makers—ranging from tech engineers and policymakers to authors, activists, and educators—with actionable insights, tools, and strategies they need to succeed.

    The Opportunity

This full-time, Boston-based position is ideal for an inspirational leader experienced in nonprofit fundraising, personnel, and financial management. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with a strong Executive Team, talented staff, and committed Board of Directors to oversee the day-to-day management and strategic execution of JHA’s operations and initiatives.

    Role and Responsibilities

    Leadership and Strategic Planning

In collaboration with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the Executive Director will:

    • Create and implement long-term vision and strategies to advance the organization’s mission, goals, and financial sustainability.
    • Develop an annual strategic plan that includes budget, revenue growth targets, and key initiatives to ensure fiscal health and successful mission fulfillment.
    • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing leadership team, ensuring effective support and alignment with JHA’s goals.
    • Foster a safe, inclusive, and productive work environment, cultivating a culture of collaboration, accountability, transparency, and excellence across the organization.

    Fundraising

Working closely with the JHA Director of Development (DoD), the Executive Director will:

    • Create development and endowment goals, methodology, source prioritization, and tactical plans aligned with organizational strategy.
    • Actively participate in fundraising campaigns in partnership with DoD, including prospect cultivation (major gifts, foundations, DAFs, family offices, etc.), making asks, and following up with ongoing donor stewardship.
    • Attend fundraising events; some travel required.

    Operational Oversight

In collaboration with the Operations Manager, the Executive Director will:

    • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of JHA’s programs, services, facilities, and personnel to ensure positive pursuit of organizational goals.
    • Develop and implement effective policies and procedures to optimize operational efficiency and ensure smooth day-to-day functioning.
    • Oversee the execution of benefits program, insurance, and other organizational requirements.
    • Ensure nonprofit compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

    Financial Management

In collaboration with the Board's Finance Committee, the Executive Director will:

    • Lead the development and management of JHA’s annual budget, ensuring it aligns with the organization’s strategic goals and supports long-term financial sustainability.
    • Work closely with the Operations Manager to oversee accurate and timely financial reporting to key stakeholders, including auditors, the JHA Board, and senior leadership.

    Public Relations

In collaboration with JHA’s communication staff:

    • Serve as a key spokesperson for JHA, representing the organization and advocating for its mission and programs.
    • Manage comprehensive marketing and communications strategies and execution to strengthen JHA’s public image, increase visibility, and expand outreach efforts.

    Board Relations

In collaboration with the officers of JHA’s Board:

    • Shape and guide the strategic vision of JHA, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and long-term goals.
    • Actively participate in board meetings, providing timely and accurate reports on key initiatives, financial performance, and organizational progress, typically quarterly or as requested by the Board Chair.

    Qualifications

Interest and general fluency in JHA's core divisions—science, ethics, collaborative networking, and publishing—is important, though advanced expertise in all areas is not required. As humanity faces an increasingly complex future, individuals who can navigate and integrate multiple approaches are essential to the adaptive stance that JHA promotes and embodies. We are seeking an Executive Director who is passionately aligned with our mission to support positive change by articulating adaptive responses that are both research-informed and ethically-guided.

    How to Apply

If you are ready to embark on this adventure with us, please submit your resume along with a cover letter explaining why you are both interested in and qualified for this role. Please describe your approach to nonprofit management and your experience in the field. Email materials in a single pdf document to admin@justhorizons.org. No phone calls will be accepted. Applications will be reviewed beginning March 1, 2025, until the position is filled. Just Horizons Alliance is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
