DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPIC OPERATIONS
& GRANTS MANAGEMENT
Schedule: Full-time
Location: Remote, 30% travel required
Reports to: Director of Resource Strategy & Development
Salary: $120,000- $150,000, with full health benefits for employee and dependents, employer-funded retirement plan, remote work stipend, and 28 days of vacation and 12 sick days accrued per year

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) is an ecosystem of organizations and individuals creating a shared vision and strategy to win rights, control and resources for Black people. Building on the legacy and strategies of past movements, the Movement for Black Lives has created a broad political home for Black organizers, activists, and their organizations. POSITION SUMMARY
The Movement for Black Lives is entering a new multi-entity fiscal structure that will bolster our capacity to provide comprehensive infrastructural support to our broad movement ecosystem. As part of this transformation, we seek a Deputy Director of Philanthropic Operations prepared to design and implement effective development operations systems and strategies that will support the new fiscal entities and thoughtfully address the emerging needs of the communities we serve. This role will report to the Director of Resource Strategy & Development and work closely with the Deputy Director of Fund Strategy. They will supervise the Development Operations Lead and will eventually be charged with recruiting and managing a dedicated team whom they will support and coach to achieve team and individual goals including but not limited to professional development and consistent evaluation and feedback.
This Deputy Director will design and oversee the resource development team’s systems for database usage, revenue tracking, prospecting, and moves management; as well as monitoring M4BL’s foundation funder portfolio and grant management. The successful candidate will be curious, driven, organized and a firm believer in the importance of quality data and systems management, contributing operational excellence, efficiency, and rigor to the team. We seek an experienced development professional who is excited to build new systems and initiatives in an evolving organization and is dedicated to M4BL’s ideology and values.
This role includes travel approximately eight weeks per year for internal staff gatherings, convening with M4BL’s ecosystem organizations, and external conferences. May also require travel and work on occasional weekends and evenings as determined.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Strategy and Implementation
- Serve as a strategy partner with Director of Resource Strategy & Development in ensuring the team's success in meeting its fundraising goals through implementing the systems that will enable large scale fundraising campaigns
- Drive development operations strategy to provide the infrastructure, processes, procedures and systems that optimize efficiency and productivity for the team
- Regularly analyze and report on the performance of various revenue channels and recommend informed adjustments to strategies
- Manage resources including budget and staff across fiscal entities to ensure optimal allocation in line with strategic priorities. Monitor expenditure and resource utilization to maximize efficiency.
Reporting and System Management
- Develop, implement, and monitor fundraising systems including those that project revenue and track donor pipelines, moves management, reporting mechanisms, information technology, and data infrastructure to support operations as they relate to all fundraising programs
- Supervise gift acceptance, recording, and tracking; including the timely and accurate production of all gift reporting, statistical analyses, and evaluations
- Create policies and procedures for all development operations systems and ensure they are being implemented; including overseeing knowledge management for these policies and training resource development team members as necessary
- Oversee operations of M4BL’s foundations portfolio, including monitoring systems for tracking pledges, payments, reporting and renewal deadlines; and collaborating with Finance & Operations and program staff on grant management
- Oversee collaboration with the Finance & Operations department on reconciliation, tracking, projections, and other issues
- Manage and support the Development Operations Lead in providing effective prospect research to the team including wealth analysis data pulls and development of robust donor profiles
- Ensure that fundraising activities across all channels adhere to legal and ethical standards, proactively identifying and mitigating risk
Database Management
- Oversee work of Development Development Operations Lead, ensuring all data entry and reporting is accurate and timely, and acknowledgement letters are promptly issued
- Work with frontline fundraisers and Development Operations Lead to develop, implement, and refine movement's management data systems such as dashboards and reporting procedures
- Develop, implement, and monitor data transfer systems between CRM, online fundraising and email platforms, and wealth analysis tools across multiple fiscal entities
- Work with M4BL’s Integrated Technology team to assess and determine appropriate technologies tailored to each fiscal entity, managing projects related to selection, installation, implementation, and maintenance of fundraising technologies;
- Collaborating with M4BL’s IT and security teams to develop risk mitigation strategies and ensure the security and integrity of donor and revenue data across fiscal entities
Team Management
- Hire, orient and lead a team of development operations professionals that are committed to M4BL’s core values of abolitionism, anti-capitalism, and Black Queer Feminism; striving to incorporate these values into all systems building and team development practices
- Develop the capacity of the team, deepen understanding of their roles and assist with career development
- Provide team members with the information, tools and resources to improve performance and reach objectives
- Promote accountability, communicate expectations, and provide constructive feedback informally and formally via regular one on ones and performance reviews
- Create and sustain a work environment of mutual respect where team members strive to achieve excellence

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 6 years of nonprofit or movement building experience that is centered on resource generation; including 3 years of supervisory experience
- Experience creating systems to manage complex and large-scale development initiatives
- Sophisticated understanding of and experience leveraging data and operational systems to enhance multi-channel fundraising strategies
- Capacity to develop both annual, long term campaigns and effective tactics and models for rapid response moments, as well as adapting existing strategies to emerging needs
- Proven track record of establishing and overseeing a comprehensive grants program
- Experience training and answering questions on new systems from non-technical users
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage several projects concurrently with varying timelines and adapt to changes in project requirements and/or the work environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workplace Suite and experience with fundraising CRMs, preferably EveryAction
- Experience managing and negotiating vendor contracts and relationships.
- Experience navigating C3/C4 compliance
