    Description

    The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) is the nation’s largest independent union of federal employees, representing employees in 36 federal agencies and departments. NTEU is the voice of the federal workforce on Capitol Hill, in the courts, at bargaining tables, and in the media. We fight for fair pay and benefits, improved working conditions, and other issues that affect the working lives of federal employees.

    There is a vacancy in the Office of General Counsel for an Assistant Counsel. The Assistant Counsel represents NTEU in litigation before administrative tribunals, the federal district courts, the Court of Federal Claims, the courts of appeals, and the Supreme Court. The incumbent also advises the General Counsel on general legal questions raised by other components within NTEU. In doing so, they assist NTEU in continuing to fulfill its mission:

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Conduct legal research and prepare written material for use in representing NTEU and its members.
    • Draft motions, pleadings, and briefs as well as advocacy-focused content.
    • Collaborate with other counsel and staff on litigation strategies.
    • Represent NTEU in litigation before administrative tribunals, the federal district courts, the Court of Federal Claims, the courts of appeals, and the Supreme Court.

    Qualifications

    The role requires a candidate with strong interpersonal skills, a high degree of maturity, a willingness to learn, and a desire to manage a challenging workload of work involving high-stakes litigation. An ideal candidate must be able to:

    • Independently draft well-researched briefs, motions, pleadings, responses, and other legal documents.
    • Provide legal advice involving the analysis and interpretation of constitutional, statutory and administrative law.
    • Litigate cases before administrative bodies and in the federal courts.
    • Communicate orally and in writing, including the ability to negotiate with third parties on behalf of NTEU and its members.
    • Effectively manage numerous matters across multiple areas and set priorities independently.

    Education

    Any candidate must be a graduate of an ABA accredited law school and have demonstrated strong academic performance. Candidates must be eligible to waive into the District of Columbia bar if they are not already members.

    Experience

    At least 3 years of experience in legal practice, preferably in federal court. One year of experience may be met through the completion of a judicial clerkship if completed by the time of hire.
