Requirements

The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) seeks a Senior Press Secretary to lead media engagement and strategy for C2ES policy and advocacy communications. Primary responsibilities include direct media engagement, development of communications plans, talking points and media release production, and managing tv and radio bookings and print interviews. The Press Secretary will work in coordination with Vice President of Communications to manage a booker and media consultant. The press secretary will also support communications teammates in website management, social media messaging, execution of live and virtual events, and other activities promoting C2ES products and activities to engage policymakers, the business community, the energy and climate research community, and other stakeholders. Qualified applicants will have at least 8 years of communications experience, strong existing relationships with climate and energy media contacts, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Vice President of Communications.

Major Responsibilities:

• Maintain and develop strong relationships with a wide range of U.S. and international climate and energy policy editors and reporters across media (print, radio, TV) and podcasters
• Originate story ideas in conjunction with program staff and place with media contacts
• Proactively secure opportunities and manage media inquiries for staff, and support them by providing talking points and strategy and with logistical help as needed
• Coordinate frequent background meetings and develop relationships between reporters and fellows or senior staff
• Work with program staff to identify opportunities of potential media interest well in advance – e.g., C2ES publications, reports, convenings, major program milestones – and lead press rollout strategy including drafting press releases, talking points, fact sheets and other resources for journalists; developing tick-tocks as needed; and coordinating outreach to media
• Help to secure regular radio and tv bookings for C2ES President and senior program staff and manage necessary media training
• Maintain media lists and profiles for key journalists
• Maintain a catalog of issue-focused talking points to be deployed and updated as needed
• Collaborate to plan and execute in-person and virtual events
• Act as spokesperson for C2ES.
• Meet C2ES's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) expectations:
• Participate in monthly DEI all-staff meetings, where staff can interact and learn about different topics provided by the C2ES Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) council
• Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
• Complete company trainings assigned during onboarding and on a yearly basis

Qualifications:

• Maintains an active and extensive network of influential reporters and columnists in the fields of climate, energy, environment, policy, economics, and financial institutions, working in in the United States and internationally
• Demonstrated success in running results-oriented and cohesive policy campaigns in coordination with government relations goals
• Excellent written and oral skills
• At least 8 years of work experience in the communications field, including extensive experience working with and pitching journalists with tier one outlets and trade publications
• Ability to think critically, work collaboratively and/or independently, and identify resources that improve or expand capabilities as needed
• Proficiency in WordPress, Cision, Canva, Zoom Webinar, Adobe Creative Cloud suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro is preferred
• Willingness to learn and pitch in at all levels
• Undergraduate degree in communications, public policy, environmental studies, or a related field. A postgraduate degree in these fields is a plus.

Salary: $97,000-122,000 annually, depending on background and experience. Excellent benefits.

Employment Status: Full time, benefits-eligible; exempt from overtime.

Travel, Time & Location Requirements: C2ES operates a hybrid work environment from our main office at 1400 K Street NW, Suite 1100. Washington, DC. Due to the nature of this role, we will consider candidates local to the DMV area. In addition, the selected candidate is expected to work from the office three days per week.

Some domestic travel for events and conferences is required. Candidates must have the right to work in the United States.
