    Description

    Background:

    The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) seeks a qualified candidate for the Environmental Protection Coordinator position in New York City. The position will focus on NYPIRG’s programmatic efforts to advocate for NYC’s Local Law 97, a world-leading bill to decarbonize NYC’s largest buildings. This position offers an exciting work experience and the opportunity to have a lasting impact on New York City’s communities and environment.

    Description:

    The Coordinator will participate in outreach to coalition partners, constituents, and NYC college students to build a base of support, event coordination, and legislative advocacy in select New York City Council districts in the Bronx and Queens. The Environmental Protection Coordinator will help develop content for public educational efforts and coordinate project involvement among NYPIRG’s campus chapter staff and student volunteers at Bronx Community College and Queens College. The Coordinator will participate in regular conference calls with program staff, conference workshops, trainings, student and staff meetings, and be responsible for drafting various written materials. This position reports directly to NYPIRG’s Program Director.

    Responsibilities:

    • Coalition Building:
    • Participating in regular coalition planning with partner organizations and regularly communicating with coalition partners and supporters.
    • Identifying and engaging new community-based organizations.
    • Organizing:
    • Generating petition signatures in select Bronx and Queens Council districts.
    • Working with college students and NYPIRG campus-based staff at Bronx Community College (BCC) and Queens College (QC) to build a list of engaged constituents and college students, organize campus educational efforts, and generate grassroots action.
    • Organizing and hosting one Town Hall-style event in the Bronx and participating in a Town Hall-style event in Queens.
    • Participating in and speaking at press conferences.
    • Advocacy:
    • Scheduling and participating in advocacy meetings with Council members
    • Materials/Communications
    • Writing factsheets, sign-on letters, workshop agendas, and media materials like news advisories, letters to the editor, and press statements.
    • Creating social media toolkits for events and advocacy.
    • Preparing and hosting briefings and workshops.
    • Administrative:
    • Regularly log advocacy activities and other mandated protocols.

    Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA):

    • 3-5 years of experience in community organizing or similar field.
    • Exceptional interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • A commitment to social change and environmental justice.
    • The ability to motivate college students and community members.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and multi-task.
    • Ability to manage busy days, occasional weekends, and some travel.
    • The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job.

    • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft applications, and social media applications.
    • Fluency in a second language is highly desired, but not required.
    • The ideal candidate is a versatile, creative, and energetic person capable of handling numerous tasks expeditiously to meet the demands of ever-evolving policy debates.
