    Media and Outreach Specialist

    Half-time or full-time

    As the global leader in comprehensive humane education, The Institute for Humane Education inspires and equips people to address systemic challenges in ways that do the most good and the least harm for people, animals, and the environment.

    We are helping people implement our award-winning Solutionary Framework, which anyone can use to assess local and global problems and create ethical, actionable solutions.

    We are educating a generation of solutionaries. We provide resources and training for educators across the globe to prepare their students to collaboratively build just, sustainable, and humane solutions to the problems in their communities and world.

    We are growing the field of humane education. In partnership with Antioch University, we offer the only graduate programs linking human rights, environmental sustainability, and animal protection to prepare people to be humane educators who can teach about these interconnected issues.

    We are building a future where all people, animals, and nature can flourish through our thought leadership which includes books, essays, interviews, TEDx talks, and keynote presentations.

    What we need is the level of media coverage and attention that such a vision warrants. We are looking for a highly creative and capable outreach coordinator who knows how to pitch stories and build relationships that will garner media attention and inspire people to engage with our mission.

    This role will be a remote contract role. Candidates should be diligent remote workers who are able to commit at least 20 hours a week if applying as a part-time contractor or up to 40 hours per week if applying as a full-time employee.

    Primary Responsibilities

    The Media & Outreach specialist will:

    • Pitch and submit content from Zoe Weil and other members of IHE to be featured in high-profile news outlets, major publications, and journals.
    • Pitch Zoe Weil for podcasts directly or help onboard and manage a podcast matching tool/agency.
    • Help Zoe Weil maintain her professional website and social media accounts by scheduling/sharing all podcasts, op-eds, blogs, etc.
    • Identify story angles and craft and circulate compelling, timely, and news-relevant press releases and pitches that will circulate IHE’s ideas and events.
    • Help team members secure presentations and keynotes at conferences and leverage conference media coverage and sponsorship opportunities.
    • Support efforts to cross-market and create media-worthy events with IHE’s partners and alumni network.
    • Work with fellow members of the communications team to ensure synergy between earned media spots, Zoe’s channels, and IHE’s owned channels.

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • An interest in and commitment to social justice, environmental sustainability, animal protection, humane education, and the solutionary movement
    • A deep and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Bachelor's degree, ideally in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field
    • A minimum of 2 years experience as a public relations professional, media outreach specialist, or related role in earned/paid media, ideally with experience working with nonprofits
    • Highly computer literate with capability in email, MS Office, Google Drive, Canva, and related communication and organization tools
    • Highly strategic and creative
    • Meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the area of proofreading and producing error-free materials
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • A great team player and relationship-builder
    • A portfolio of work available for review is a bonus
    • Experience with simple website editing (WordPress) is a bonus
    • Experience with conference and event planning is a bonus

    Details

    • We are open to hiring a part-time contractor role or a full-time role depending on the applicant and the range of responsibilities they can cover
    • Location: Remote (must be able to communicate with staff during business hours in the Eastern Time Zone)
      • Salary: $50,000-58,000 depending on experienceIf hiring for a part-time role, this will be adjusted to an hourly rate
