Our leadership team and Board are committed to influencing systemic change across the sector deploying innovative solutions to make housing and services more available to extremely low-income individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Our evidence-based, person-centered case management has exceptional outcomes; for 16 years running, Heading Home’s permanent housing retention rates have been 90%+. At all levels of the organization, we work daily to significantly influence the dismantling of oppressive, unjust systems for our staff and clients, the majority of whom identify as non-white and/or Hispanic/Latinx(a)(o)(x).     Collaborative Team. We are a highly intentional, relationship-based team that works cohesively to achieve results. The Director of Major Gifts (DMG) will join us at an exciting time, following three years of record-setting fundraising results and shift to a culture of philanthropy. In collaboration with the Development team, s/he will leverage our extensive volunteer opportunities, event sponsorships, and grant submissions to deepen relationships.

    Relationship Builder. The DMG will focus on cultivating and stewarding meaningful relationships with current mid-major individual, family, community, and corporate donors, as well as develop a portfolio of prospects. A curious learner, s/he is authentically interested in others and their goals/interests. The DMG will create and implement uniquely designed cultivation strategies including prospect development, moves management, and pipeline planning. The DMG is a problem-solver and a trusted steward. S/he will develop a keen understanding of our programs and value proposition. This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of a collaborative and creative fundraising team committed to building highly integrated, impact-based partnerships.

    Essential Job Functions

    The successful Director of Development will be a self-starter, enthusiastic about helping donors end homelessness for families and individuals alike. She/he will:

    • Build deep relationships with funders that uniquely address their needs/goals and meet them at their moment
    • Sustain and grow major gifts, contributing to FY 2022 annual department goals of $3.5m in revenue generation
    • Manage, coach, and positively support Heading Home’s Community Engagement Associate, meeting weekly and as needed to oversee workload and ensure coordination of responsibilities
    • Oversee and leverage Heading Home volunteer events including Backpack Buddies, Heading Home for the Holidays, and Up & Outs, as critical prospect engagement and donor stewardship strategies.
    • Collaborate with the team’s Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications who is responsible for grant submission based on unique donor needs
    • Initiate event sponsorship solicitations, using Heading Home events as engagement tools for support and stewardship
    • Further advance diversification efforts by engaging life sciences, health care, and financial services sector prospects
    • Opportunistically identify mid-level funders and deepen those commitments

    Requirements & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • 5 to 7 years of work experience
    • Exceptional listener with ability to present opportunities that meet needs, resulting in high impact relationships
    • Ability to create and execute fundraising strategies including a track-record of successful proposal development and gift asks
    • Superior interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
    • Minimum of 2 years of management experience, with strong abilities to manage, coach, and rapidly develop the skills of direct report
    • Excellent project management skills, including prioritizing and managing competing deadlines within a fast-paced environment
    • Commitment to Heading Home’s mission and shared values on inclusivity and equity
    • Extensive experience with Microsoft Suite and CRM software, preferably Raiser’s Edge
    • A valid Massachusetts driver’s license in good standing and access to a car
    • Able to lift at least 40 pounds

    ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Sitting, standing, reaching above, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, traversing, thinking, speaking, writing, concentrating, interaction with others, ability to lift and move packages up to 40 pounds.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Shared office within a large office building. Position requires a minimum of 4 days onsite. Office is climate controlled with heat and air conditioning.
