    Description

    The Progressive State Leaders Committee (PSLC) is a 501(c)(4) organization that works to advance solutions to emerging legal and policy issues on both the federal and state level, with a focus on how state attorneys general can promote policies grounded in the rule of law.

    Job Title: Public Safety Working Group Fellow

    Department: Policy

    Reports to: Policy Director

    Compensation: $10,000 to $12,500/month depending on experience

    Position Type: Non-employee contractor

    Purpose: PSLC seeks a Public Safety Working Group Fellow (Fellow) to provide vital assistance to state attorneys general on public safety and criminal justice reform initiatives and to educate the public about the role of state attorneys general in public safety and criminal justice reform issues. In addition to producing high quality legal research and writing, the Fellow will staff and support a forum for AGs to identify and share best practices around emerging public safety issues. This is a one-year, 35-hour-a-week contractor position that can be performed from anywhere in the United States.

    Required Qualifications:

    • J.D. Required
    • At least 5 years' experience in criminal justice reform, criminal justice, or public safety policy

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong commitment to and understanding of criminal justice and public safety and the areas of intersection with the work of state attorneys general;
    • Ability to effectively communicate, through both writing and public speaking, to various audiences about complex legal and policy issues;
    • Excellent analysis, writing and research skills;
    • Experience working in collaborative environments with both individuals and organizations;
    • Demonstrated initiative and creative problem-solving; and
    • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in criminal justice and public safety reform work, including experience with advocacy, research, and legislative analysis.
    • Experience developing and leading systemic reform

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Cataloging and disseminating successful legislative, litigation, and programming strategies already underway in states
    • Generating and publishing relevant policy analysis in partnership with academic researchers, think tanks, and advocacy groups
    • Attending relevant meetings/webinars to stay abreast of developments
    • Researching and analyzing new and innovative criminal justice and public safety reform policies and recommendations on topics including: evidence-based state level crime intervention, gun violence prevention and reduction, juvenile crime prevention and reduction, and others.
    • Cataloging and disseminating relevant evidence-based progressive criminal justice and public safety research
    • Identifying and disseminating grants, funding, and other resource opportunities for state level criminal justice and public safety efforts
    • Creating written content (short and long form) that identifies and advocates for opportunities for state attorneys general to engage directly with progressive programs, through implementation, funding, etc.
    • Drafting model templates, including legislation and policy language
    • Assisting with other legal and policy projects as needed

    Skills/Abilities/Expertise:

    • Significant experience with criminal justice and public safety issues
    • Impeccable research and writing skills
    • Ability to adapt writing for various audiences ranging from layperson to seasoned legal professional
    • Strong time management skills, stays on top of multiple projects, develops and executes a plan of action with minimal supervision
    • Team player who can thrive working with a largely remote team
    • Familiarity with the state attorney general community considered a plus

    Education:

    • J.D. degree required.

    Location:

    PSLC’s office is located in Washington, DC. This position can be performed in the office or from anywhere in the United States.
