    Jewish Currents is seeking a Managing Editor to help oversee every aspect of our wide-ranging editorial operation. This person will manage editorial workflow across print and web as well as production of the print magazine.

    Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. We cover a wide variety of topics, including the uses and misuses of antisemitism, the inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, Israel/Palestine politics on the ground and internationally, race and racialization, strategies and horizons of American left movements, the global rise of the far right, diasporic cultural expression, labor, climate, incarceration, immigration, and feminism.

    You do not have to be Jewish to be right for this job, and we invite candidates from a broad range of backgrounds invested in and familiar with our work.

    Responsibilities

    Management of editorial workflow

    • Track all internal deadlines and ensure accountability to them
    • Determine editorial capacity by maintaining systems that track ongoing work
    • Support editorial staff to meet deadlines and publication schedule
    • Assign editorial work based on staff capacity in consultation with the editorial management team
    • Cultivate a workplace culture that supports editors in meeting their goals and finding satisfaction in their work

    Production work

    • Manage production of JC’s quarterly print magazine, including keeping the editorial staff accountable to production timelines; coordinating fact-checking, proofreading, and typesetting processes; and communicating with our printer
    • Upload content online
    • Manage awards submissions

    Editing

    • Edit all promotional and marketing materials, including event copy, subscription drive copy, and podcast show notes
    • Conceptualize and edit pieces for Jewish Currents as time and interest allow

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of relevant experience in media
    • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
    • Strong editing and writing skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to create and maintain organizational systems
    • A fastidious and detail-oriented approach to production work
    • Ability to multi-task and manage various responsibilities
    • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and oral communication

    Location and Team Structure

    This position will be part of the editorial management team with preference for candidates based in New York City.

    The compensation for this position is $90,000 – $100,000, depending on experience. We offer a competitive benefits package, including:

    • Health insurance (with options for fully employer-paid plans)
    • Fully employer-paid vision and dental insurance
    • 401(k) with 3% employer match
    • 15-25 paid vacation days per year, depending on years of service
    • Paid sabbatical after 5 years
    • Two weeklong paid breaks (August and December)

    Jewish Currents is under contract with the WGAE. The managing editor is an excluded position.
