    Position Description

    Executive Director

    Position Overview:

    East Haddam Youth and Family Services (EHYFS) seeks an Executive Director to provide leadership, direction, and coordination in the planning and implementation of all agency activities within the purposes, policies, and budget approved by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director must be an enthusiastic, compassionate and experienced leader with a demonstrated commitment to social service and advocacy on behalf of children and families.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide overall management of the agency
    • Implement EHYFS’s mission, goals, vision, and philosophy as approved by the Board of Directors
    • Prepare and oversee agency budget and process, in collaboration with the agency bookkeeper, Board Treasurer, and East Haddam Boards of Finance and Selectmen.
    • Establish an environment of open communication and team problem solving
    • Identify community needs, present and future, and coordination of programs and activities to address those needs
    • Work with staff to develop, review, and evaluate programs and services relative to the identified needs of the community and the agency mission
    • Develop new initiatives to integrate and coordinate into the philosophy and goals of the agency
    • Keep current on trends and developments in the fields of mental health/substance abuse, family development and initiatives, juvenile justice, and other topics relevant to youth and family services
    • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to plan, develop and create reports to increase and enhance funding resources for the agency via development of grant proposals or other funding options. Act as advisor to the Board, keeping it informed of agency operations through effective collaboration with the members
    • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the agency facility and equipment
    • Communicate effectively the agency's goals and vision before local, regional, and state agencies through presentation and appropriate use of media

    Personnel Management:

    • Effectively supervise, guide, and direct all staff and oversee the appropriate use of volunteers for agency projects.
    • Hold staff to appropriate program standards and code of conduct
    • Provide opportunities for staff training and professional development
    • Recruit and interview candidates for employment. Advise Board of Directors on selection of staff

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Knowledge of current services available within the community and state that will assist staff in delivering services (inclusive of available financial resources)
    • Strong management and leadership skills
    • Experience with fundraising and grant writing/preparation proposals
    • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong skills in assessing difficult situations
    • Responsibility for personal and professional growth
    • Flexibility of weekly hours, including occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings and/or events
    • 3+ years experience in nonprofit management
    • Bachelor’s degree preferred
