    Description

    OVERALL FUNCTION

    The Senior Director, Revenue Compliance will report to the AVP, Financial Planning and Analysis and serve as the team leader of a five-person financial compliance function within the Corporate Finance team.

    This position will serve as a finance business partner to Development’s donor relationship managers, finance and operations staff supporting programmatic areas and the CFO. The Revenue Compliance team focuses on four core areas of responsibility:

    Ensuring Grant Compliance

    Complying with Audit Expectations and Financial Planning

    Enabling Donor Engagement

    Contributing to Organizational Initiatives and Special Projects

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Team Management and Function Leadership
      • Manage the Revenue Compliance team, including developing the team’s knowledge and skills, providing feedback, balancing workloads, and cultivating a culture of inclusion and belonging.
      • Establish and refine the Revenue Compliance team’s processes, balancing risk to EDF with donor concerns and cost of compliance.
      • Raise the visibility of the Revenue Compliance team by advocating for the team’s services and ensuring key internal partners understand the team’s value and the impact of its work.
      • Be seen as a trusted authority on EDF’s revenue compliance function, holding staff accountable, and helping to find practical solutions among diverse organizational stakeholders on complex financial compliance matters.
    2. Grant Compliance
      • Set standards for and perform independent reviews of donor budget proposals, agreements and financial reports to ensure data integrity and drive alignment of donor expectations with EDF’s financial needs and ability to execute.
      • Partner with Development to determine appropriate documentation for complex grants.
      • Maintain indirect cost rate details on grant records and move revenue into pooled Indirect Cost Recovery fund.
      1. Oversee endowment reporting and usage of temporarily restricted funding, ensuring compliance with donor’s intent and adherence to EDF’s endowment management practices.
    3. Audit Expectations and Financial Planning
      • Oversee ongoing analyses, sample testing and controls designed to ensure data quality of cash flow projections, indirect cost rates, gift agreements, and other aspects of gift documentation.
      • Respond appropriately to internal and external audit requests.
      • Coordinate responses to donor audits, collaborating with Finance, Legal, Compliance, Development, and other teams on documentation and responses.
      • Review donor projections and timing of pledges receivable in support of various analyses including expected future cash flows.
    4. Donor Engagement
      • Thoughtfully address donor due diligence and financial compliance requests, drafting verbiage, compiling documentation, preparing charts and conducting analyses as requested.
      • Develop and implement targeted strategies for how Revenue Compliance can help strengthen EDF’s relationships with key donors and donor-types (e.g. institutional, major gifts, governmental, multilateral).
    5. Organizational Initiatives and Special Projects
      • Continuously improve project and program budgeting, grants management and donor reporting capabilities.
      • Develop and maintain policies and procedures that clearly document the purpose and process behind Revenue Compliance’s core functions and activities.
      • Develop and manage processes to maximize indirect cost rate recovery.
      • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

    Qualifications

    • Undergraduate degree in relevant field required; advanced degree preferred.
    • 10 years of related work experience in fundraising, accounting or finance in a non-profit; experience in international organizations a plus.
    • Prior experience with government funding and other high-touch revenue channels with complex compliance requirements.
    • Knowledge of financial accounting standards and procedures for non-profits; experience with fund accounting a plus.
    • Experience with US Federal or European Commission acquisition regulations and grant/contracts management a plus.
    • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex financial and compliance information to technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Proven ability to be a strategic business partner. Able to provide decision support to internal stakeholders across Development, programmatic teams, and executives to strengthen financial compliance and address donor concerns.
    • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds
