    Description

SOS Meals on Wheels seeks a skilled storyteller to write articles and feature copy on behalf of our organization. We currently require four articles per month. Versions of these articles will appear in our newsletters, our annual report, and on our blog. Our team, led by the Director of Development, will curate topics, provide word counts, and supply a one-page guidance document for each article. The guidance document will contain key points, relevant statistics and other information that is necessary for writing to begin.

We would like to work with a writer who can accommodate the following flow: after providing you with the guidance document and giving you time to write, we would ask you to submit an initial full-length version for review. After we return comments, and iterate until the full-length version is considered final, we would ask you to craft derived narratives on the same story.

For example, for short articles of ~500 words or long articles of ~1,000 words, we would ask for additional breakdowns that could be used to tease the article across channels:

    • 125-word version of the same story (that tells the whole story in shorter form)
    • 75-word teaser (that tells part of the story, then links off to article-length version)
    • 50-word teaser (that tells part of the story, then links off to the article-length version)
    • 250-character teaser (that tells part of the story, then links off to article-length version)

The candidate we are looking for:

    • Is a self-starter who can riff off of solid guidance and a good angle
    • Is an experienced writer who can produce a strong first draft
    • Has honed journalistic instincts and can "flesh out" the story that needs to be told
    • Understands voice and tone and can emulate ours
    • Is comfortable working independently
    • Is eager to write to high editorial standards
    • Does not use AI for their professional writing and commits to not using AI in relation to our organization

Preference will be given to candidates who can show:

    • An affinity for issues facing homebound seniors or experience working in this space
    • An understanding of the region we serve: Alameda County, CA
    • Prior work in a traditional editorial environment
    • Experience writing social media copy
    • A strong portfolio

Interested candidates are asked to submit a resume, cover letter, and three writing samples.
