    Description

    New Haven Youth Tennis and Education is a youth development organization providing academic support, tennis instruction, and enrichment through after school and summer programming to underserved students in New Haven, Connecticut.

    As part of our pathway program, 9th and 10th grade students can serve as counselors in training (CITs) in our Summer Academy. For part of the day they play tennis and keep up their math and reading skills. For the rest of the day they engage in leadership activities and take on a role as a counselor, coach, or intern in the program. We seek a Program Director who can work part-time to guide and mentor these young people.

    Dates: June 30-August 1 (closed July 4)

    Time: Monday – Friday, 4 hours each day, potentially 10:30 am – 2:30 pm

    Location: On the campus of the Hopkins School, 986 Forest Road, New Haven, CT

    Salary: $3000

    Duties:

    • Create and implement leadership training activities for 6-10 counselor-in-training students (rising 9th and 10th graders who have come through the New HYTEs program)
    • Oversee CIT students when they are placed in their roles and provide timely feedback on their performance
    • Lead some academic time for CIT students
    • Attend a 2-day staff training on May 31+June 1 or June 26+27

    Desired qualities:

    • Enjoys working with young urban teens
    • Able and willing to mentor students
    • Comfortable creating a fun environment while also providing firm direction and feedback as needed
    • At least one year teaching in a middle / high school or similar experience preferred
    • Age 21 or older
