    Job Title: Executive Director

    Organization: Iowa Safe Schools

    Location: Central Iowa (hybrid, ~ 10% travel expectation)

    Reports to: Board of Directors

    Job Summary:

    Iowa Safe Schools is seeking a dynamic and visionary Executive Director to lead the organization in its mission to create safe and inclusive educational environments for LGBTQ+ youth in Iowa. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all operational, financial, and programmatic aspects of the organization while advocating for policies that promote the safety, health, and well-being of students in schools across the state. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with staff, the Board of Directors, key stakeholders, and community partners to ensure the continued success and impact of Iowa Safe Schools.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Leadership & Management:

    • Provide strategic leadership, ensuring alignment of Iowa Safe Schools’ programs and initiatives with its mission, vision, and values.
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, including staff supervision, program development, and implementation.
    • Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in nonprofit management.

    Fundraising & Resource Development:

    • Lead fundraising efforts to secure financial support through grants, donations, and partnerships.
    • Build and maintain relationships with donors, foundations, corporate sponsors, and other key stakeholders to strengthen financial sustainability.
    • Manage the annual fundraising campaign and special events, ensuring effective communication with potential funders.

    Advocacy & Policy:

    • Advocate for policies that protect LGBTQ+ students and promote safe and inclusive schools at the local, state, and national levels.
    • Work with schools, state agencies, legislators, and advocacy groups to advance legislative initiatives that benefit LGBTQ+ youth.
    • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Iowa Safe Schools, representing the organization in media, public forums, and legislative bodies.

    Program Development & Evaluation:

    • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs that support LGBTQ+ youth, including education, support services, and training for educators.
    • Ensure the effectiveness and impact of programs, adjusting strategies as needed to meet evolving needs in the community.
    • Collect and analyze data to measure program outcomes and report on progress to the Board and other stakeholders.

    Financial Management:

    • Oversee the organization’s budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and responsibly to support the mission and goals.
    • Monitor and report on financial performance, ensuring fiscal health and long-term sustainability of the organization.
    • Work with the Board of Directors to establish financial goals and policies.

    Board Relations:

    • Work closely with the Board of Directors to develop and execute strategic plans, ensuring alignment with the mission and long-term vision.
    • Provide regular updates to the Board on organizational performance, financial status, and progress on key initiatives.
    • Collaborate with the Board to identify and recruit new members and maintain strong governance practices.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management, preferably in the fields of education, LGBTQ+ rights, or youth services.
    • Strong understanding of the challenges and needs of LGBTQ+ youth, particularly in the context of schools.
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including youth, educators, policymakers, and donors.
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising and resource development, including grant writing, reporting, and donor cultivation.
    • Experience with program development, implementation, and evaluation.
    • Knowledge of state and national policies related to LGBTQ+ rights and education.
    • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation and oversight.

    Preferred:

    • Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, public policy, social work, or education).
    • Experience working with Boards of Directors and guiding them through organizational growth.
    • Familiarity with the educational system in Iowa and the specific challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students.
    • Passion for social justice, advocacy, and creating inclusive environments for marginalized communities.
    • Knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software.

    Compensation:

    • $85,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience
