    Description

    The Colin Powell School at The City College of New York is hiring a Finance Associate to assist with budgets, disbursements, requisitions, accounting, and financial reporting. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Human Resources for the Colin Powell School, the Finance Associate will play a key role in all finance and accounting functions of the School, including processing and tracking personnel appointments, scholarships, fellowships, donations, invoices and miscellaneous expenses. The Colin Powell School’s finance unit is a fast-paced environment, and we seek candidates who will be customer service oriented, proactive in improving processes and procedures, able to manage time and relationships well, and have a desire to take initiative within a group environment.

    The Colin Powell School includes all of the social science departments at CCNY as well as most of the core leadership development and public service programs of the College. Graduating the most CCNY students annually, the Colin Powell School promotes the values of service and engagement. The School supports a faculty of more than 250 tenure, tenure-track, and adjunct professors dedicated to the highest standards of research and to the university’s democratic and public obligations; the School is committed to disseminating research in usable forms, especially that which furthers equality, prosperity, stability, and peace for all people—in Harlem, in New York, and around the world. The School’s annual budget is $18 million. The Finance Associate will be an employee of the CUNY Research Foundation and will be expected to work in-person on CCNY’s campus in New York City.

    Core responsibilities:

    • Produce and process accounting transactions and documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
    • Review transactions, support documents for accuracy, consistency, authorizations and compliance.
    • Track and reconcile the receipt of donations from donors
    • Create requisitions and receipts for the purchasing of goods and services requested by the Dean and departments of the Colin Powell School
    • Monitor transactions—both those in tax-levy and non-tax levy accounts—for clearing and outstanding items.
    • Serve as a liaison with other departments within City College and the CUNY Research Foundation to provide and gather information related to financial transactions.
    • Compile, maintain, and review budgets and accounting ledgers for accuracy. Generate standardized financial reports for the Dean.
    • Resolve transactional inquiries, escalate broader issues.
    • Respond to transactional inquiries from faculty and staff across the Colin Powell School.
    • Review and handle p-card administration, processing, and expendable reimbursements.
    • Prepare and process disbursements.
    • Participate in new initiatives as needed.
    • Maintain accounting/finance departmental files and desktop procedures and process documents for area of responsibility. Ensure compliance with College and University policies, and federal regulations and requirements.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree (e.g. BA, BS) or equivalent, with a preference for those who have majored in accounting, finance, or a related field;
    • Excellent communications skills;
    • Customer focused experience; passion for delivering excellent customer service;
    • Experience preparing financial reports for various audiences (e.g., program staff, directors, funders, etc.);
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability;
    • Proven ability to analyze financial circumstances and provide financial recommendations to operations team leadership;
    • Ability to prioritize and manage time;
    • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced organization and handle multiple accounts simultaneously;
    • Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with colleagues and partners at all levels;
    • Highly proficiency in MS Excel; and,
    • 2-3 years of relevant work experience preferred;
    • Experience working with Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge preferred;
    • Experience working with CUNY systems preferred;
    • Experience working in higher education or nonprofit sector is preferred but not required.
