About Us:Founded in 2009, The African SOUP is a Ugandan-led, indigenous NGO with roots in rural Nabikabala Village where it serves over 900 children and families with community designed-programs that are creating lasting solutions to fight poverty and fueling a push for national education reform. Our community programs include a nursery and primary school totaling more than 750 children; a scholarship program for SOUP graduates to attend secondary school; and a home visitation program serving 120 families and 50 pregnant mothers across 16 villages. Our drive for education reform centers around active learning, which we model at our School.

Position Overview: The Chief Development Officer is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to drive growth in revenue and increase donor engagement. This person will report to the US Board Chair and will work closely with the leadership team in Uganda and the US Board to ensure fundraising efforts are aligned with programmatic priorities. In addition, the Chief Development Officer will be engaged in strategic planning, assist with the budgeting process and provide financial oversight for all donations received. This person is expected to lead ethically, compassionately, and in accordance with organizational values as outlined within the Human Resource Manual as well as other documents.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and execution of The SOUP’s fundraising strategy, in collaboration with the US Board fundraising committee and the Ugandan leadership team, to meet and exceed annual revenue goals and advance the organization’s mission.
  • Oversee the identification and development of new funding opportunities.
  • Develop and implement appropriate fundraising strategies to increase giving, employing a variety of techniques, including individual meetings, online campaigns, fundraising events, and written communications.
  • Develop a cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategy for new donors.
  • Work with the fundraising committee and the US Board to leverage their networks and expertise in fundraising efforts and donor relations.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, prospects and other stakeholders.
  • Manage The SOUP’s CRM system (Salesforce) to track and analyze donor data and ensure all records are kept up to date for effective stewardship.
  • Prepare proposals to effectively communicate The SOUP’s mission, programs and fundraising priorities to donors and prospects.
  • Plan annual networking and fundraising events to raise awareness of The SOUP’s activities and cultivate funding opportunities.
  • Provide financial oversight for all donations received and work with Ugandan leadership team on disbursements of funds.

• Assist with strategic planning and serve as key thought partner to the US Board and leadership in Uganda.
  • Work with the leadership team in Uganda to define and track key deliverables and goals of each program and ensure effective reporting for foundation and individual grants.
  • Participate in calls with the US Board and Ugandan program leads to monitor progress, discuss challenges and ensure alignment with expected deliverables.

• Lead the development and execution of The SOUP’s communication’s strategy in collaboration with the US Board and Uganda leadership team.
  • Update SOUP website as needed and manage social media accounts
  • Create materials to be leveraged in various communications and fundraising activities with varied audiences, including newsletters, informational one-pagers, annual impact report, and other communications materials as needed

Standards by which performance will be evaluated:

• Ability to communicate The SOUP’s mission, vision and purpose and represent the organization effectively to donors, prospects, stakeholders, supporters and partner organizations.
• Ability to set and meet fundraising goals for The SOUP, ensuring that the organizational budgets and forecasts are developed in a timely manner and that the operational and strategic goals of the organization are fulfilled.
• Ability to cultivate and steward relationships with donors, partner organizations and volunteers who provide support for The SOUP, as well as with the Ugandan team.
• Ability to successfully execute fundraising campaigns and special events.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required, with a preference for experience serving an organization operating in a developing country or one that focuses on education and/or community development
• Experience in project management
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to work independently and meet objectives with minimal supervision
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grant writing
• Experience in financial oversight
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Passion for the mission of The SOUP
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree
• English language proficiency required

Compensation:

$75,000 - $85,000 plus a $500 monthly stipend for health insurance.

Location:

We are seeking a candidate based in Atlanta, GA. While the position will primarily be remote, there will be occasional in-person meetings and events with Board Members, donors, and other stakeholders.
