The GENDER EQUALITY LAW CENTER is looking for a part-time (20-30 hours per week) contract attorney with a minimum of five years of litigation experience, preferably in federal court.
GELC is a small public interest, not for profit law firm. Our mission is to represent low and moderate income individuals seeking redress for gender-based discrimination in the workplace, in school settings and in other private and public spaces. GELC defines "gender" broadly to include, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The primary, but not exclusive focus of our work includes : (1) sexual harassment and violence prevention; (2) pregnancy and caregiver discrimination; and (3) LGBTQ + rights. All of our cases involve intersectional claims, including gender plus race, national origin, immigration status, etc... GELC's litigation focuses on not just obtaining monetary compensation for our clients, but also on how we can bring about systemic institutional change. GELC also works with various state and national coalitions to advance legislative and policy initiatives to help better protect individuals from being discriminated against on the basis of gender.
The job duties associated with the part-time attorney position include:
(1) Handling a small caseload of their own cases; especially for Spanish-speaking clients
(2) Handling intake for Spanish-speaking clients;
(3) Supervising and assisting more junior attorneys, post-graduate law fellows and law students;
(4) Reaching out to and forming relationships with private law firms interested in providing pro bono assistance with cases GELC is litigating:
(5) Working on select legislation that GELC is seeking to advance.
The successful candidate must be a fluent Spanish speaker so as to be able to work with GELC's Spanish speaking clients.
The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar and have at least five years of litigation experience, preferably in federal court. Experience litigation employment discrimination cases is a plus.
