    Director of Finance

    San Francisco, CA (headquarters)

    The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is seeking a full-time Director of Finance based in our San Francisco office. This is an exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. The ILRC currently has a hybrid work model requiring two in-office days per week.

    The ILRC is a national nonprofit legal support center headquartered in San Francisco with staff in Washington, D.C., Austin, Houston, Laredo, and San Antonio, TX, Southern California, the San Joaquin Valley of California and Washington state. The mission of the ILRC is to work with, educate, and enhance the capacity of immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector, in order to build a democratic society that values diversity, dignity, and the rights of all people. Founded in 1979, the ILRC is regarded as one of the foremost experts on engaging immigrants and developing their leadership in the democratic process, providing expertise on complex issues of immigration law, procedure and policy, and engaging in advocacy and educational initiatives on policies that affect immigrants. We are a team-based organization that makes most of its decisions in a collaborative fashion that allows for significant staff input.

    The Director of Finance is a critical member of the organization’s management team that provides leadership and strategic guidance for the finance team. This includes overseeing financial services to ensure the organization’s fiscal health and financial accountability, legal and compliance obligations, and day-to-day finance needs.

    Job Responsibilities: The Director of Finance will lead a team of four to accomplish the following objectives:

    Fiscal Management (with the assistance of a controller and three other finance staff members):

    • Manage annual agency budget of $20+M, working with the Executive Director to create a yearly budget and quarterly reforecasts of that budget for review and approval by the Board of Directors. Create a three-year budget.
    • Provide high-quality fiscal management throughout the year, tracking income and expenses, reporting monthly progress to budget, and highlighting issues and areas for focus.
    • Ensure compliance with external requirements and regulations, including annual audit, tax return reporting, and all state and local filings.
    • Manage all accounting functions to ensure outstanding services and appropriate controls for payroll, re-granting, payables, receivables and cash management.
    • Provide financial support to programs, including models for grant proposals and financial reporting for funders.
    • Monitor and manage our investments, including monitoring our manager of long-term investments, and directly investing our short-term cash.
    • Provide direct support to the Finance and Audit committees of the Board of Directors.
    • Manage all our insurance policies and vendors, including general liability, employment practices, professional liability, and workers’ comp policies.
    • Provide support as needed to the ILRC’s benefits programs, including retirement programs and pre-tax contribution programs.
    • Be a thought partner to the Executive Director and the senior management team, particularly when planning for growth and utilizing the organization’s financial strength to maximize our impact.

    Board Interface

    • Work with Office Manager / EA to interface with the Board of Directors.
    • Present to the Board 4-5 times per year.
    • Staff the Finance Committee of the Board. Present to the Finance Committee 4-5 times per year.
    • Create and maintain all financial schedules distributed and presented to the Board and any committees of the Board.

    Qualifications: The successful candidate will have:

    • At least 8-10 years of financial and accounting experience in a leadership role.
    • A formal finance and accounting education; a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred.
    • Both for-profit and not-for-profit experience preferred.
    • Experience on a senior management team, preferably working with the Board of Directors.
    • Advanced financial modeling and forecasting skills.
    • Experience coordinating the budgeting process for an organization with a multi-million dollar budget and significant grant funding and re-granting.
    • Excellent project management skills, including the interest in and ability to lead cross-functional matters across the organization.
    • Intellectual curiosity that leads to understanding and optimizing the financial and administrative components of the organization.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex data, findings, and ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
    • Respect for all co-workers.
    • A strong work ethic, including the following qualities: organized, flexible, reliable, goal-oriented, and dependable, with the ability to be an independent worker, and ability to handle several projects simultaneously while thriving in a team-based collaborative decision-making environment.
    • Strong technology skills preferred, including proficiency in Sage Intacct and advanced skills in Excel and Power Point.

    Compensation/Benefits:

    Pay is commensurate with experience, with an expected range between $185,000 - $200,000 per year. The ILRC offers excellent benefits, medical/dental/vision insurance, EAP sessions, a flexible spending account for medical and dependent care, vacation, and sick leave. The ILRC also sponsors a retirement plan option upon fulfillment of eligibility. Additionally, we offer an annual professional development stipend of $2,500, and, from 2024 – 2027, an annual wellness stipend of $2,500.
